Tape Tuesday: Reunion
I made this mix long before the FIELD TRIP and THE RACE. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been adding and removing songs from the mix, trying desperately to perfect it. I’ll be honest; the idea behind REUNION was to make a mix that somehow captured some of the magic of M83′s Hurry Up We’re Dreaming. I mean, currently, that’s my front-runner for album of the year, so it makes sense.
REUNION is my way of paying homage to M83′s great album; hopefully, it does it justice.
The tape can be divided into three stages of life: childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Tracks #1-6 cover childhood, starting with a single from The Sound of Arrow‘s excellent album Voyage and culminating at Australian rapper 360‘s nostalgia-inducing gem, “Child.”
Tracks #7-14 get moody and emotional. They are really inconsistent in their tones, starting very excitedly at “Reunion” and “Fantasy” and then transitioning into the very dark and personal “Palace” and “Buried Alive (Interlude).” Adolescence ends with “Summer Camp” by Summer Camp, a song from the band’s commerical debut Welcome to Condale–another great album. If Summer Camp can’t make you feel like a teenager again, I don’t know what can. I’m a teenager right now, and they make me feel like even more of a teenager! SMH. Swag.
“Missed Calls” and “Letter Home” mark the transition into adulthood, dealing with those late nights in the city, drink in hand, thinking of ex-girlfriends. That happens, right? The mixtape ends with an 8-minute song that will melt your pants off if you’re patient enough. I swear, the chorus on “Hold On” is the most infectious thing since the swine flu. Hey, let’s break the download record on this one. GO GO GO!
