The Tallest Man On Earth – The Drying of the Lawns

The Drying of the Lawns – The Tallest Man On Earth by D Prep
The first post I ever published on Sunset in the Rearview was the song “Cough Syrup” by the Jakes. A girl I love showed me that song. The same girl showed me this song by The Tallest Man On Earth. I’ve been a big fan of his music for a while, but I’ve never gotten around to listening to much of it by myself. I’m like that with music sometimes–I’ll really like it when my friends play it, but I’ll never get around to listening to it or downloading it onto my own computer. I’ve been going back and rediscovering his music (I’ve had a few songs in my iTunes library for a while: Where Do My Bluebird Fly, A Field of Birds, etc.), and this remains to be my favorite song by him.
The intricate, yet laidback, finger picking of the guitar, the deeply metaphorical lyricism, the unique vulnerability of Kristian Matsson’s voice…nobody does it quite like The Tallest Man On Earth. The 27 year old Swede has a sound I’ve never really heard before. His voice is as unmistakable as Neil Young’s, his lyrics as powerful and potent as Dylan’s; yet somehow, he has managed to fly under the radar.
Maybe that’s the way it should be though–the best gems are hidden.
Congrats on your ACT El.
“Well I’ve said I’ve sailed the frozen corners of the dark Atlantic Sea
And I drifted on the waves and the mirage beneath
And never have I felt such numb and pointless searchin’ true
As when I set my eyes and torched the plans on the mark of you”
