Sunset Selections is a curated collection of original songs written exclusively for this mixtape by our favorite breakthrough artists of 2013
A lot of people contributed to the making of Sunset Selections, so I decided to write this post as a thank you note. It feels dumb writing it, so if you feel dumb reading it, understand that that is okay. First and foremost, I would like to thank the artists who were a part of this mixtape for being so accepting of this idea and all-in with this project. You guys surpassed my expectations on that front and then met my expectations with the awesome songs you sent (my expectations were really high okay–that’s why we asked you to contribute). I would also like to thank the Sunset Fam for working their asses off for me and this idea. Without getting too sentimental, I love these people more than my own family. Just kidding. But they are cool, and it’s cool how Lydia set up a submissions page, Eric made a legendary trailer, Alicia let me use her collages, Jordan and Andy got artists on board, and they all listened to me vent about all the bullshit and awesomeness that took place while heading up this project. I really think the mixtape does its job of capturing this moment in time, but more than that, pieces of it are timeless. Oh God, that was ‘cheez‘-y. Fuck, I can’t stop. Just… let this mixtape soundtrack your 2013 and then your entire life.
Jimmy Fallon likes Sunset Selections. Well, sort of… you have to watch the ultra cool trailer by our writer Eric to find out. The mixtape comes out tomorrow, which is just a trip ’cause I remember having the idea for it a few months ago. The experience of putting this mix together has been both really frustrating and super enjoyable. The entire #SunsetFam contributed to the making of the mixtape–whether it was through contacting artists, letting me “borrow” their artwork, or making this kick ass trailer. Also, the artists on the tape have been amazing and supportive of this idea. But shit, I guess I’ll talk more on that tomorrow.

Two minutes and 25 seconds. That’s all it takes for Jon Waltz to piece together one of his most confident tracks to date. “Crew Initiation” sounds like if Drake was in the NWTS phase of his career at age 18. It is yet another display of the gradual realization of the Memphis rapper’s full potential and a perfect addition to the collection of songs by the breakthrough artists of Sunset Selections.
Our all-original mixtape will be here this Thursday (10/10) for free download.
Sterling Fox (born Brandon Lowry) is a songwriter from New York via Pennsylvania. He is one of the many talented writers working behind the scenes on hits like Gym Class Heroes’s “Stereo Hearts” and Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games” (literally, Fox co-wrote and co-produced the first and co-produced the second). It is a good lifestyle–being able to do something you love professionally–albeit sometimes frustrating not being publicly rewarded for your work. This is the music industry, and there is talent everywhere. With recent features on tracks with Avicii and Skizzy Mars and his own burgeoning solo career, Sterling is finally getting some of the recognition he deserves. I was lucky enough to interview the rising star and discuss his work with mainstream artists, his love for NYC, and what is next for pop music.
And yes, he is on Sunset Selections, our biggest mixtape of the year, dropping this Thursday (10/10).
We were floored by Minnesota-based rapper Allan Kingdom‘s 2013 mixtape Talk to Strangers, so naturally we asked him to join the cast of this year’s Sunset Selections. He quickly blessed us with “Cheez,” which to me sounds like the most zen trip into a lost Tibetan monastery. The sparse beat is challenged by Kingdom’s questioning (“so why you trying to climb up my sycamore tree?”) and a razor sharp closing verse. Talent-wise, I think the sky is the limit for Allan Kingdom, and with friends/fans like Plain Pat and Poliça, I just don’t see him not making a big splash in hip-hop and music in general.
Sunset Selections will be here on 10/10 (next Thursday!). The final single comes out next Tuesday (10/8).
Sacrifice and art seem to go hand in hand. You know there are probably hundreds of think pieces on the Internet arguing over whether Kanye can ever truly be happy because, as he knows and we know, art is more interesting when it’s painful. CP‘s new single, the first offering from our all-original Sunset Selections mixtape, sounds like it was somehow created in a cave atop the coldest mountain in Russia. The beat is spaced out yet in your face, and the verses are angry and like, really explicit. The chorus, borrowing from REM’s 1991 hit “Losing My Religion,” sounds cold and desolate like an echo from a past life (whatever that means). Seriously, this is exactly what Sunset Selections is about: transformative sounds from young, talented artists.
Sunset Selections will be here on 10/10. Next single comes next Tuesday (10/1).
Time is fleeting. Summer is almost gone, and it feels like it started just yesterday. Similarly, today is my second year anniversary writing for Sunset, and I remember typing my debut Conan O’Brien post with like 10 Twitter followers and no real experience. Also, we are closer to 2014 than we are to 2012. How crazy is that? So basically, the Sunset fam wanted to capture this moment in time by asking our favorite breakthrough artists for exclusive tracks for a mixtape we are calling “Sunset Selections of 2013.”
There are so many reasons we are creating this tape. Most importantly, we want to show the world who we think stands out among young artists and get new (free) music directly to the fans. Also, we want 2013 to last forever. Like, yesterday was the 10th anniversary of the O.C. premiere, and luckily we have those shows and its soundtrack to look back on fondly. We want this mixtape to represent this year for you, so you can remember how it felt to live in 2013. Before you know it, summer will be gone forever, and you’ll be attending 20-year high school reunions (sorry if that got sad).
The mixtape will be out October 10th. We already have so many exciting artists confirmed for it.
The first single will be out September 24th. Welcome to Sunset Selections.
Update #1: While it might be fun to be a part of, I hate exclusivity… which is sort of the crux of Sunset Selections. So, on September 4th we are opening up a section of our Facebook page that allows YOU to privately submit an original, unreleased track that will be listened to by us. From the submissions we’ll choose one song to join the Sunset Selections of 2013 official mixtape. Submissions will be open until midnight October 1st.
Update #2: It’s time! Submit your song to join the Sunset Selections of 2013 here. It will only be listened to by the Sunset staff, and you reserve all the rights, etc. We will choose one song to join the incredible team of breakthrough artists we have already approached, and we will email the artist with the winning song. Also, hit the jump to see the cover of the mixtape.
