Sometimes I get this feeling that my life is speeding ahead in the fast lane and all I can do is try to step back and beg to slow it down. My mind will go a mile a minute while my body stands still, leaving me victim to many sleepless nights. The best I know to do is put on some music (some choose TV, I tend to choose music or a good book) and try to lose myself in that narrative rather than my own. I’m in one of those places right now, so here’s my best attempt to slow my roll. Some of the songs are really slow and minimal, others are a little bit upbeat (because too slow and life can find itself getting too heavy). Soundtrack after the jump.
Fear of Missing Out is the reason I check my Twitter (and Facebook and email) every second of every day. It is the reason I did not want to stay an extra day in D.C. with extended family. The deep-rooted fear of missing out on something almost always involves friends or girls or dreams. For this mix I wanted to take songs that may seem simple or one-dimensional and uncover their second and third dimensions. I think behind each of these songs there is a vulnerability and fear, and that fear is what makes this tape heartbreaking and relatable. The common fear of missing out that lives within us also lives within this music. And it also doubles as a great mix for your imminent post-NYE depression.

Happy Halloween SITR readers. I imagine you’re in the mood for something a bit spooky to get you going on this haunting holiday? Kwabs has got the soul and darkness to have you mesmerized within seconds with his new track “Last Stand”. Not only does this track set the mood for a day like today but it’s one that you’ll definitely remember and have you wanting more. SOHN’s personal touch as producer gives this track the extra sparkle and intertwines beautifully with Kwabs beautiful, powerful voice. Listen to the incredible track below (if you dare!)
What better way to catch up on a week of new music by starting with the very best?
The 16-year old musical prodigy from New Zealand is back at it. And she struck gold again. At this point, it’s not fair to the rest of the 16-year-olds in the world who at one point appeared to be standouts. Enjoy mediocrity, all-16-year-olds-minus-Lorde!
Sexy is back. This time, in the form of soaring vocals like those of Justin Timberlake, Sam Smith and John Newman. This week it’s Sid Batham who gets to make us drool with his pipes. On top of that, “All Lies” has a bit of an old school triumphant vibe to it that’s almost oddly reminiscent of Mariah Carey’s older music. It feels weird making that comparison, but I really think I hear it.
I felt calm when I started listening to this new song from SOHN, which features an undulating baseline that loops throughout the majority of the track. But then there’s a point right around the bridge when it swells up and catches you offguard. It’s a little unsettling, but then again, so are the closing lyrics: this time I’ll keep away from you. This is solid production from the newly signed 4AD member.
This track has been out on the market for a little bit, but with Until The Ribbon Breaks releasing his full EP last week, it’s worth calling attention back to the standout track from the EP, A Taste of Silver. The whole thing is a bit mindblowing, but this track is what started it all. Tell me your heart doesn’t flutter when you hear “maybe in another life, if we get another life, maybe in another life, I’ll learn to love you” for the first time.
I’ve gotten pretty particular with my mashups these days (apologies to those who live for Mashup Mondays), because they’re kind of a thing of the past. But when a solid mashup like this one by Isonine comes along, god damn I love it. This is perfect. Mashup justice.
Here he goes again. SOHN is back with another tune that’ll have us all wanting a debut album from this talented artist. Once again he brings a track that’s filled with tender, soulful vocals and teamed up with a soothing, unique sound. “Lessons” is mesmerizing and addictive, can’t argue with that one. Go ahead and listen to the fresh sound below.
Banks has become one of the most mesmerizing new artists to keep track of this year. From her sexy, dark music to her amazing collaborations with artists such as Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and now SOHN. Every song she’s released has it’s own unique identity yet continues to follow that gloomy, seducing vibe. “Waiting Game” is no different. All I can say is, I think we’re ready to have a full album to put on during a late night and get lost. Keep it comin’ Banks.
