Skizzy Mars makes party music. It’s really that simple. This one is called “Summer11.” I think maybe because that was the summer before he went to college, and the song sort of gives off that vibe. It’s for solo cups and dancing and friends, and it’s all over a super rare Rhye-sampling beat by Mikey Fresh.
I want to see you faded, you deserve to feel amazing
Okay, I know it is a Saturday, but today is also June 1st a.k.a. the beginning of the summer months. Did you really expect me to drop a summer mixtape on any other day? Welcome to Summer is the perfect driving-with-the-windows-down mixtape. Like, that is the sole reason I made it. Whether you’re rolling into town blasting RL Grime‘s remix of Chief Keef (making eye contact with the old lady in the car next to you at a stoplight) or just shouting the lyrics of Planetarian‘s “Swim” at the top of your lungs as you cruise down the interstate, this mix works. Plus, how legendary is the sequence of Chance The Rapper into Reggie Watts into Chief Keef into Disclosure?

You daydream about the sea, and I daydream you’ll be mine,
Underneath the shade of leaves, stars over the trees,
Spending a whole summer with you that sounds alright, I’ll,
Meet you in the evening so we can swim tonight
P.S. In case you missed it I made a promo video for this tape. First ever, very rare.
I probably don’t need to say much about Ryan Hemsworth at this point, because I have gushed over him time and time again in posts here on Sunset. But if you’re still unfamiliar, Ryan Hemsworth is a musician who jump-started his creative career as a music journalist from Halifax, Nova Scotia. The incredibly talented producer is only 22-years-old, and he’s quickly creating demand from top-ranked brands like Nike for live performances. He first caught my attention with his remix of Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You,” and I haven’t turned back since then. With today’s remix of Rhye’s “Open,” Ryan once again proves his ability to hear music that was perfectly fine, if not nearly perfect, on its own, and add his own touch to it and make it an arguably more alluring song in the end. I could get used to this whole Rhye-n Hemsworth blend.
I’ve spent the past couple of days laying low and listening to music. I’ve turned down offers to go out on the town or explore different areas of the city, only to find myself alone by my computer engrossed in the crevaces of new lyrical patterns or instrumental orchestrations. It’s times like these that I am able to remind myself how much music means to me. The past month has been an interesting one. There have been emotional roller coasters (as you probably noticed if you follow me on Twitter), but there have also been moments of feeling like I can take over the world. It’s all part of the realization that life is a day-to-day thing. From one day to the next, you never know what’s coming your way. Be prepared for what will be thrown at you and you’ll make it through okay, I suppose. But today? Today feels like just another day.
Shout out to the people who led me to find these songs. They’re part of my story, one way or another.
Just another day around the way, try to make today better than yesterday

If you follow my Twitter (Who am I kidding? Everyone does!), then you know that last night was kind of rough for me. Really, you can barely tell that without really reading into my tweets because I enjoy subtweeting and trying to make jokes even when I’m sad. These are probably bad habits that I will probably keep, but anyway, the point of this story is that I’m a sensitive little girl and this song is a representation of me last night.
Shout out to Duncan Cooper of Fader for premiering the track and for saying, “I think [“Open”] includes the love-lyric, I’m a fool for your belly, which, on top of all these gentle strings and dancing harp lines, is so uncomplicatedly sweet it makes me sick to my stomach about every half-nice thing I’ve said that should’ve been more direct.” Girls, man, girls.
Also, the two members of Rhye are part of other well-known bands. Further details about the duo are being withheld by The Man.
