Beach Jesus is a group of four friends from Chicago, consisting of producers JAROFMY and SEER and vocalists Chandler London and Jessiath. They have a sound so unique and completely their own that they could probably get a patent on it. They call it “dream-hop,” a transcendent listening experience where the boundaries of genre are blissfully ignored and your favorite indie band occasionally raps.
Below are my favorite tracks released so far by the collective. Their debut project Two Weeks Vacation will be dropping any day now.
Back in July of this year, I discovered “Uptown Boys” by Netherfriends and immediately fell in love with the track. But of course, as life goes with the hustle and bustle of music blogging, I hadn’t revisited the song in a little while because I’ve either been on the constant pursuit of even newer music, or I just haven’t had time to listen to music at all (the latter being the sadder, more realistic excuse in my life of late). So you’re all “sad story, bro” right now. But it gets better. (And.. I’m not a bro, but it’s whatever.)
Yesterday, Eric sent me a tweet pointing me to an Otherly remix of “Uptown Boys.” I got all giddy, and pressed play to hear this trippy version of the Netherfriends original. It’s different – definitely doesn’t have the upbeat, pop sound that the original has – but the dark, brooding atmospheric vibe is pretty alluring. It sounds like it could fit right into a soundtrack of a movie like Drive. Point being: Otherly did a good job flipping this little-known song that has now not once, but twice reminded me just how much I love music.
Which do you like better: the original or the remix?

I’ve probably listened to this new track from Netherfriends and Jams Dean at least 8 times since yesterday. It’s got that catchy beat from Netherfriends and Jams Dean has a simple, relaxed flow on top of it that references amusing topics including selfies, Principal Belding, and Alanis Morissette. Like…this isn’t even great rapping. Most times I would probably hate this shit. But it’s too good because it bounces over that beat too easily. It’s just so simple. And so is the music video. I’m not going to include that because it really is shit, and actually just takes away from the fun little tune that I’ve become addicted to over the past 24 hours. Go watch it for yourself if you really care.
Also, if you were like me and wondering who the heck Jams Dean is and where he came from, just know this: he’s from Chicago and his rap skills aren’t anything too notable. If they do suddenly become fantastic, I’ll update yall. For now, this song is his only one really worth listening to.
Lord god please help me, every picture that I take is a selfie
This summer was a miracle. I started off with almost no plans and ended up going to London with my dad, spending the Fourth of July at the beach with my best friends, and interning with my aunt in Washington (D.C.). I think the biggest lesson I learned from these travels is that it is not about where you go, it is about who you’re with. “Beach Is Better” is not saying that weekend at the beach with my friends was my best trip. It is saying that you can make a “beach” wherever you go. And that’s always better.

We’re about one month into summer so it’s only right for the Sunset Fam to give you a dose of our favorite songs of the season so far. We’ve compiled a list that’ll make you want to cruise to the beach with your windows down, with no worries in the world. Here’s our top 20 must-have tracks to get you going for the rest of this lovely season.
1. Netherfriends – Uptown Boys
There’s not much I can say other than this jam by Netherfriends is one of the coolest songs I’ve ever heard. If I could only transport back to college and just drive around campus blasting this song with my windows rolled down. Fuck it, though, I’m just going to put my headphones on, play this song on repeat, and strut around living like it’s a summer day every day. It’s easy to dream when you’re always high. – Lydia
2. La Plage – Rendez Vous
3. Sol – Jump In
To be honest, I go back and forth on Sol. Sometimes I think his content is lacking substance. But when it comes to a summer tune, sometimes the last thing you want is heavy content. That’s part of what makes this song so perfect. It’s light, airy, and catchy as ever. music is my baby, she drive me crazy – Lydia
Some people just seem to know how to make a catchy song. It seems that Chicago’s Netherfriends is one of them. The 27 year old born by the name of Shawn Rosenblatt but better known by his stage name of Netherfriends just released a new song called “Uptown Boys” that captures so many things I beg for in a catchy song: a sing-along vibe, a stomp-clap beat, a slowed bridge, and a part in the song where he delays the expected delivery one beat long enough to make it stand out (I’m referencing the part at 0:43).
This is a summer jam worth keeping on rotation on your portable boombox. Smoke some weed, walk the streets, and share the summer spirit. Almost a complete winner from Netherfriends. He only got one thing wrong: the song is only 2:15 long. Add 1:15 to the song and it’s perfection. “Uptown Boys” is a single off his upcoming release P3ACE (pronounced “three peace”).
