It happens. You’re going through everyday life when something makes you take a step back. Maybe you’re at an office party or maybe you’re just sitting at home with family. Everything seems normal.
Then it happens. Something clicks in your brain and you realize how weird everything you’ve been doing is. After thousands of gradual events and decisions, you’ve somehow convinced yourself it’s “normal” to get up in the morning, make a hot brown drink out of beans that magically wakes you up, then spend eight hours in a big glass building with a bunch of people you’d never otherwise spend time with, working on something you don’t care about. Then you look around and notice everyone else seems to be okay with the situation — even though it suddenly seems so bizarre to you. Are you crazy? Or have you spent your whole life convincing yourself to believe something is “normal” even though it probably isn’t?
Maybe the crazy homeless guy interpretive dancing on the street as you walked to work isn’t as crazy as you thought. Maybe you’re both just living life in different ways and neither of them is “wrong”. Maybe your preconceptions about what’s “normal” are holding you back from doing what you actually want to do. Maybe it’s healthy to continually reevaluate what you’re doing (or at least loosen up a little and laugh at how ridiculous it is).
Or maybe I just completely over-thought a goofy video from MGMT. I don’t know. Watch it below.
Things are getting weird in the Land of Music Videos. It seems it’s becoming trendy (and no, that is not statistically correct to say, because it’s only 2 that I know of) to center music videos around the death of imaginary animals that serve as pets. First Yeasayer shocked the world with their music video for “Madder Red,” which features Kristen Bell mourning over the loss of her strange, and rather revolting-looking pet. As grossed out as I first was, I found myself moved by the direction and the storyline.
Next thing I knew, I finally got around to watching the music video for “Congratulations” by MGMT, and they had the same premise! Too weird. But once again, moving…heartwarming, if you will.
Check it out for yourself and see what you think. Is this weird to you? Do you like one better than the other?
By the way, in getting all of the links for this post, I realized I’m not the first one to associate these two videos with each other. So I apologize for the apparent lack of originality, but how can you not think of one when you see the other?
BONUS: Thanks to a comment from Kathy, I’m now aware of the fact that you can buy the MGMT record on Amazon for only FIVE dollars. Do it. You wont.
*Datsik has some nice dubstep remixes to classics. Once again, I’m typically not a fan of remixes, or dubstep, but these are doing it for me, because they’re not overdoing it with the beat or totally tearing apart the song. The Paper Tiger song is just great – I am a big fan of Doomtree (the label), and this is a beautiful new release that everybody needs to have. Waiting for one of the Doomtree rappers to hop on the beat!

Jonsi does a cover of MGMT’s “Time to Pretend.” As justly stated by the listener sitting next to me, “beautiful voice. The piano is great too.” Exactly what I would have said. Once again Jonsi makes me feel a bit like I put on a pair of wings and could float right into the sky.

Fucking weasel, you’ve lost your touch
Skinny as hell, but it’s not enough
Life is a mineshaft of love.
But don’t dig too deep.
MUSIC VIDEO: “Pursuit of Happiness” (ft. MGMT, Ratatat) – Kid Cudi
Christmas morning came 17 days early!!!! Ahhhh this video makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Exactly what I was expecting from Cudder on this song.
1. Man crush between Cudi and Drake in this? Seems so. Nice features though-Drake, Consequence…where’s the rest of G.O.O.D. Music? And MGMT/Ratatat?
2. Love the classiness-the men in their suits. Ah, yes. Yes please, yes please.
3. This question is geared toward a special someone in my life, so you can ignore it since you wont get it: is that a class ring Cudder is wearing? Get back to me on that when you see this.
“Pursuit of Happiness” – Kid Cudi ft. MGMT & Ratatat
Perfect timing. Since I didn’t want to release the leak URL, I was hoping I could atleast post one of my favorite songs from Cudi’s new album. Sure enough…one of my favorites was released as a third single from the album. The mix of electronic and hip hop in this song embodies, in my opinion, a whole new move that hip hop is making. This type of collaboration is going to become common, and in my opinion-that’s not a bad thing at all. I love it.
