Have you ever experienced one of those breakthrough moments where you feel like FINALLY you’ve reached what you’ve been trying to get to for so long? I had one of those today. I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve been in a funk for a while now – just not really feeling like myself. Work hasn’t been exciting me, and I’ve been letting that affect my personal life. But I turned 27 yesterday and I told myself that 27 is going to be better than 26. And I woke up this morning, and somehow I just felt giddy. I’ve been cheery all morning, and a big part of it has been fueled by the music I’ve been listening to. So I wanted to share 10 songs that I’m playing on repeat today (some new, some old). I don’t usually get into remixes or heavy beats, but I’m feeling it today, so why the hell not! Let the beat build!
The beautiful darkness Marika Hackman continues to feed us with is something we never seem to get sick of. This time around she’s taken another incredible artist’s track and molded it into her own beautiful sound. “I Follow Rivers” may be normally known as an upbeat, pop track by Lykke Li , but this time around it’s got a very different twist. Miss Hackman has turned it into a gloomy yet gorgeous experience. Can we agree everything she touches turns to some twisted, mesmerizing masterpiece? Listen to the perfect cover below.
I think I’m a little bit in love with Shadows on Stars. This Lykke Li cover is spot on. Be sure to head over to the Portland duo’s Facebook page and let them know who YOU think they should cover next.
Once upon a time, Ghost was my favorite movie of all time. Makes me feel a little old saying that, since now one of the main characters (Patrick Swayze, of course) has passed, one might be old enough to be creeping up on becoming senile (Whoopi, of course), and the other is … well, it’s hard to know how old Demi Moore is when her husband is like 30 years younger. Anyway, I think part of the reason I fell in love with Ghost is because I really loved the song “Unchained Melody.” Now Lykke Li has published a cover of the tune in a very stripped-down fashion, and it’s stunning. It’s obvious why people love Lykke Li (other than the fact that she’s quite beautiful herself) when you hear the pure beauty and power of her voice in this song. I think sometimes she dolls her voice up a bit too much to sound a little too youthful, but here she seems to let her pipes loose, and it sounds fantastic. Well done, Lykke.
Lykke Li is a goddess. Absolute goddess. Throw a little womp in there courtesy of the Oos and Ahhs, and you’ve got some dankness.

Styles and Complete have been featured on a couple different WWW’s, and now they’re back with a remix of Lil Jon. Who doesn’t like Lil Jon? YEAHHHHHHH. WHAT?????

The only time I’ve ever cried, in my entire life, is when I saw Hedwig die in Harry Potter. Cried for two and a half weeks, nearly died of dehydration. If you don’t like this (at least the idea…musically, perhaps it’s just a meh) then you have no soul. Bummer.

The excitement that bubbles up inside me on a Friday morning is a tad concerning to me. Am I a real person? A weekend is great, but I treat it as though it’s the best thing that could ever happen to me! And the thing is, I like work! I like what I do, I like the people around me, but Friday just trumps all of that! Why!? Ah, yes. I know why. I know EXACTLY why. Because Monday morning, Tuesday morning, Wednesday morning, even Thursday morning – I drive to work and I listen to slower music. Aint no knockin slower music; I LOVE Bon Iver, I LOVE Sufjan Stevens, I LOVE The Record Summer, and they’re what gets me through Mondays through Thursdays. But come Friday, even when it’s 8:10 in the morning and I’m driving to work, it’s time for some weekend music. And today I am here to share the love. Here is some of my weekend music. I invite you to sprinkle it over your weekend and see what fun comes of it. Be safe?

New video out today from Lykke Li. I really wondered how this one was going to play out. It starts so quiet it almost makes me feel uncomfortable. You know what I mean? I really don’t like being able to hear people swallow. Maybe that’s why I like music so much; I can’t stand so much silence. I like noise. I like movement. When you watch this video, you’ll see that Lykke Li does too. In a room full of silence and stillness, Lykke dances to the beat of her own music. That’s my type of girl right there.
Sadness is my boyfriend,
Oh sadness I’m your girl

So my boy Mikey Gendell is helping put together a dope little show at Mizzou at The Bluenote with ProbCause, Sinclair Wheeler, DJ E-V (I did a set with him, Chip Tha Ripper, and Felix Cartal this Halloween) and one of the filthiest DJ/producers around, the legendary Steve Aoki.
Since founding Dim Mak Records in 1996, Steve Aoki has since helped shape the electronic club scene as it has transitioned into a mainstream phenomenon. Steve Aoki has personally helped launch the careers of such artists as MSTRKRFT, Armand Van Helden and The Bloody Beetroots.
Buy tickets at Prime Social and sign up for the facebook event here. If you’re anywhere around Mizzou, or really anywhere around the state of Missouri, you need to get yourself to this show. Why? Well, I’ll let the music do the explaining.
So the original song featured an allstar line up (Kanye West, Santogold, Lykke Li) so you know if Steve Aoki is going to come in and put his touch on it, things are going to be ridiculous. I dare you to sit there and try to not start dancing. Seriously. Try it. Personally, I’m having trouble sitting in my chair and writing this, it’s taking all of my energy to concentrate so I don’t stand up and get my GOTDAMN GROOVE ON. “Y’all mutha fuckas know who this is…”
Cudder. Aoki. Need I say more? Probably not, but because my job is to write about music, I guess I will anyways. To say that Cudi’s song was dope to begin with would be kind of like saying the sky is blue. But when Aoki puts his spin on this one, absurd amounts of dopeness is the byproduct. He takes the stems and turns them into something new and unique, in a fashion few do as well as Aoki. Check out this video of Aoki and Cudi playing this live at Cinespace, I would give all of my appendages to go back in time and see this live.
Is this real life? Maybe. Is this a ridiculous song? Yes. Does it frequently cause people to lose control of their bodily functions? Yes. Bloody Beetroots+Steve Aoki=Your face melting slowy.
Oh yeah, did I mention this show is on 4/20? Rage.
Lykke Li is putting out a new album next week called Wounded Rhymes. Though I was sure today would be a quiet day from artists other than Thom Yorke, Lykke has proved me wrong. Good thing is, this song is so worth the little misstep. It’s pretty bold to release a single on the same day as a Radiohead single, but Lykke is entitled to that. She’s sort of got the indie world wrapped around her finger right now, because every song she puts out is so loveable. This one is a bit slower than most of her others, and in fact it makes me tear up a bit.
In case any of you who are invested in Pigset get nervous when you hear the name Lykke Li, in fear of her coming between the love of two bloggers, fear not. Confusion and I have amicably agreed that if Cudder or Lykke comes along, arrangements will be made without hurting anybody’s feelings. Keep doing your thing, Lykke. I’m cool with you.
Shout out to Kickin the Peanuts.
So dance while you can. Dance cause you must. Love out of lust.
Some new material from Lykke Li today. She’s a little crazy. It takes a special breed to make a song where they feel completely comfortable saying “I’m your prostitute, go and get some.” But we’ve always known Lykke Li is a special breed, and that’s why we love her, right? Love her or think she’s crazy, this song is awesome.

“Love Until We Bleed” (ft. Lykke Li) – QuESt
I’ve been trying to get myself to like Lykke Li for a while now because I know she’s on the rise (and I’ve been hearing from different people that I should love her-what up A.T.), but it really wasn’t until I heard this song that I was able to admit I liked her sound. QuESt is one of my alltime favorites, and I was not disappointed on this track! Be on the lookout for QuESt’s mixtape, “The Reason,” which will certainly be featured right here on sunset when it drops.
