10 Indie Songs That Help Me Relax

Sometimes I get this feeling that my life is speeding ahead in the fast lane and all I can do is try to step back and beg to slow it down. My mind will go a mile a minute while my body stands still, leaving me victim to many sleepless nights. The best I know to do is put on some music (some choose TV, I tend to choose music or a good book) and try to lose myself in that narrative rather than my own. I’m in one of those places right now, so here’s my best attempt to slow my roll. Some of the songs are really slow and minimal, others are a little bit upbeat (because too slow and life can find itself getting too heavy). Soundtrack after the jump.

Stream New Songs by The Neighbourhood and Lovelife

New The Neighbourhood!

After touring extensively over the past few years, The Neighbourhood is finally going on their first national headlining tour. They are bringing a few friends with them–friends who happen to also be some of our favorite artists, including Lovelife, The 1975, and JMSN. Icing on the cake? The guys are releasing three limited split 7″ singles with their friends; these will be available at every show.

The NBHD has never been shy about their hip-hop influences. “West Coast” marks the return of lead singer Jesse Rutherford’s rapping (previously known as Jesse James) and truly is a sun-kissed, summer jam. Lovelife’s “Every Minute” is a silky smooth, dramatic taste of indie rock witha falsetto bit that will change your life. Thank God for bands that care.

I’m so West Coast, it’s a goddamn shame

7 (Free) Indie Songs on Repeat

College took some time to get used to. There was a point when I was like, “oh no, when am I going to be able to find new music and write for Sunset?” But then yesterday, a friend of my brother came up to me and said he was a huge fan of the site, which is awesome, and when he was explaining how he realized that I was the Arjun that wrote for this blog, I tried to play it cool. But inside I was ecstatic, and really that put some stuff in perspective for me. I can make time, and I will make time. Finding and sharing new music are two of my favorite things to do, and over the last few hours I’ve downloaded so much great music that October’s Tape Tuesday is already taking shape*. This wasn’t supposed to sound like a humble brag, but I guess it did. Ahh fuck it, just listen to the music.

*September’s tape is called Summer’s Gone and will be a compilation of songs that I listened to (for the most part) between that awkward summer between middle school and high school. The idea came from all the One Tree Hill I’ve been watching lately. Is that embarrassing? Nooooo.
