Songs of the Week: July 8 – July 14

If you were slackin’ this week, let’s catch up on the best of what you missed! Songs of the Week, July 8 through July 14 edition.

1. Portugal. The Man – Purple Yellow Red & Blue (Passion Pit Remix)

Plain and simple, this one is just a proper jam. Portugal is a great band, and with the help of Passion Pit, this remix is impossible to not dance to. It’s a struggle to stay sitting just to write this post, to be honest. I saw Portugal a few years ago at Lollapalooza and have been a fan ever since–the combination of them and Passion Pit on this one is almost too much for my weak heart to handle.

2. Ghost Beach – Moon Over Japan

This is pretty much the music I would expect Passion Pit to create if they were to experience with serious hallucinogenics. Jordan calls them indietronic (indie + electronic) which I guess makes sense, but if I had to put a label on it, I think I’d call it Triptronic. It makes me think I’m Mario gokarting down rainbow road on a quarter ounce of mushrooms. Ya know?

3. King Krule – Easy Easy

I’ve seen King Krule‘s name before, but this is the first time I’ve ever actually listened to his music, and I really dig it. The minimalist, hip hop influenced (I think?) rock that he’s making is simultaneously niche and accessible. His ability to evoke emotion through such barebones musicianship is quite impressive. There’s beauty in simplicity. Well if you’re going through hell, just keep going.

4. Beach Vacation – I Saw You

So it’s no surprise here that this song sounds tailor-made for the beach. Perfect song for cruising in a Jeep Wrangler, or better yet, a Land Rover defender, just all around a pretty perfect summer sound. Beach Vacation is a definitely a newcomer to keep your eyes on.

5. as†ronomyy – Things I’d Do For You

This is also my first time hearing as†ronomyy, and to me it kind of sounds like The Weeknd meets Schlomo. Floating, ethereal, mysterious, the artists describes the track as “an escapism song, which is why it sounds a little dreamy and otherworldly.”  This is a name we will be seeing in the future, I am sure.

Saturday at Sunset: The Race

New Saturday at Sunset!

The past few weeks have been some of the most hectic weeks of my life. I have been everywhere and then some, or at least it feels like it. I think these weeks have changed my life. I think I have learned some stuff about myself, and I think I actually enjoyed the busyness. I think I proved to myself that I can handle pressure. Not school or social pressure, but real life pressure, which is basically all the pressure you’ve had all your life plus death and taxes. It’s funny though. Now that I’ve realized I might actually be able to handle adult life, I know how much I don’t want it–not now, at least.

I feel like we’ve been thrown into this race ever since we were young. A race to grow up. And the intensity of the race gets more and more as the race goes on. And it’s about right now that the race is at its most intense, and it’s scary, because I’m losing some people in the race. They’ve stopped to take a rest, catch their breath, enjoy the fresh air. It’s been a long race. At the same time, some people are thriving, so much so, that I don’t even know if they know why they want to win the race anymore! They just know they have to win, and they’ll stop at nothing to get there. Now, I have to figure out how I want to run the race. Matters are only complicated when I find out that there are no shortcuts in this race, and there are multiple ways to finish the race. More choices. Decisions. The possibilities are endless.

  1. Wake! Owl – Seaside
  2. King Krule – Bleak Bake
  3. Argentina – Camp Out
  4. The Knocks – Magic (ft. Gary Go) (Removed from mix due to copyright violation)
  5. Lemaître – Excuse Me
  6. Childish Gambino – I’m Alright
  7. Said The Whale – Goodnight Moon
  8. Hudson – Against the Grain
  9. Moonface – Fast Peter
  10. Kanye West – Coldest Winter

New Mini-Mix!

Won’t you win the race? Won’t you win the race? Won’t you win the race for me?
