Mashup Mondays have been going on for 47 weeks as of today. You realize how close that is to a year, right? Well, damn. For those of us who don’t have the attention span of a goldfish (RIP Pigeon), this is good news. For any who think of mash ups and have no reaction other than a strong craving for mashed potatoes, you are probably either resenting these posts every Monday or reading a book on Friday night when you should be at the bar, neither of which is recommended. Enough ranting, let’s get to the mashed potatoes.
1. “We R The Night” (Kesha + Diddy + Waka Flocka + Wale) – Mochi Beats
I’m not here to say that I think any of these songs in their original forms are good pieces of art. They’re not. But put together into a mashup and you’ve got a fun little party song. Plus, I’ll give him credit – Waka Flocka did make one of the catchiest hooks EVER for his piece of the pie.
2. “Free Fallin Forever” (Tom Petty + Drake + Lil Wayne) – …On The Rise…
“Free Falling” is one of those songs that’ll do it for me almost any time. I typically don’t like to see it used in mashups, but I think they did an alright job here. In fact, this isn’t nearly the strongest track these guys have, but I wanted to let you dip your toes in the water before the going really gets good.
Aer is a group out of Wayland, Massachusetts, who are creating a strong reputation for themselves right now. Born David von Mering and Carter Schultz, this duo of high schoolers are incredibly talented.
Delving into the Sublime/Slightly Stoopid genre of reggae infused hip-hop (I only say that because I don’t really know how to label them; just listen), they have immediately become one of the groups I am most excited to see progress. Using their own studio and their own production, Aer is able to create a sound that is full and extremely well produced. With a grooving guitar riff and two great, complimentary voices, Aer creates a really mellow vibe that is perfect for any mood.
Don’t sleep on Aer. They are too talented to not blow up.
And just like that, summer’s over? I’m in denial over here. And I’m not even in school anymore! But that means my Summer Fridays are gone, the peaceful view of Durham is gone, and the colder weather is right around the corner. Okay, so maybe I’m not that sad about the cooler weather. Anyway, another Monday, another Mashup. Enjoy!
