This summer was a miracle. I started off with almost no plans and ended up going to London with my dad, spending the Fourth of July at the beach with my best friends, and interning with my aunt in Washington (D.C.). I think the biggest lesson I learned from these travels is that it is not about where you go, it is about who you’re with. “Beach Is Better” is not saying that weekend at the beach with my friends was my best trip. It is saying that you can make a “beach” wherever you go. And that’s always better.

Montreal-based band How Sad took us straight back to childhood with the title track from their upcoming Indian Summer EP (out August 6th). “Stockholm Syndrome” takes back even further. It’s instrumentation seems ’50s inspired and the vocals maybe ’80s inspired. It is a sort of strange conglomerate that works perfectly and can brighten even the dullest day. You might just lose control of your neck muscles sometime in its 4 minute runtime. Just a warning.

We’re about one month into summer so it’s only right for the Sunset Fam to give you a dose of our favorite songs of the season so far. We’ve compiled a list that’ll make you want to cruise to the beach with your windows down, with no worries in the world. Here’s our top 20 must-have tracks to get you going for the rest of this lovely season.
1. Netherfriends – Uptown Boys
There’s not much I can say other than this jam by Netherfriends is one of the coolest songs I’ve ever heard. If I could only transport back to college and just drive around campus blasting this song with my windows rolled down. Fuck it, though, I’m just going to put my headphones on, play this song on repeat, and strut around living like it’s a summer day every day. It’s easy to dream when you’re always high. – Lydia
2. La Plage – Rendez Vous
3. Sol – Jump In
To be honest, I go back and forth on Sol. Sometimes I think his content is lacking substance. But when it comes to a summer tune, sometimes the last thing you want is heavy content. That’s part of what makes this song so perfect. It’s light, airy, and catchy as ever. music is my baby, she drive me crazy – Lydia
I think the most basic form of creativity starts in childhood when you give a kid a pencil and some paper. I remember when I was about 6 years old, whenever we went on family vacations, I would pack a notepad and some pencils in my Power Rangers bookbag. A blank canvas meant infinite possibilities. More often than not I would draw either mountains or NBA players, but at least I knew that I had the power to sketch any figure I wanted. This song by How Sad invokes that emotion–the cliché-jerking, I-can-do-anything, life’s-a-blank-canvas emotion… whatever that is.
This is the first single from How Sad’s upcoming Indian Summer EP, out August 6th.
