Francis and the Lights
Daylight Saving time always sneaks up on me. Every year, twice a year, it sits there on my calendar, but it seems as though my eyes have trained themselves not to notice it. So I thank god every time it comes around that my mom still knows me well enough to know she needs to remind me. Sure, I have devices that automatically update themselves (though now I sometimes wonder why the heck my wall clock, microwave and stove wouldn’t know to update themselves…like come on, it’s 2014!…what?), but it’s still worth knowing that there’s going to be a significant change in your days.
Everybody always says the one in the spring time is better. Spring forward. The sun stays out longer. The warm weather is on its way. Yeah yeah, you lose an hour of sleep, BUT IT’S WORTH IT.
This year, I’m ready to spring forward. I’m ready for longer days, new beginnings, and refreshed motivation. I’m starting a new job and am excited about it.
This latest Listen While You Work playlist stands for finding your new beginnings. Seek motivation. Chase your passions. Work for a reason. Let this be your soundtrack.
Whenever I visit my grandma, she always complains that my generation is anti-social (and stuff), and that disconnect can be frustrating. I try to explain the fast forward culture we live in, but the more I explain it, the more it seems terrible. This is going to be the last Tape Tuesday for at least a month, and ironically, it’s partially because I don’t want to live in fast forward anymore. I want to slow things down, evaluate, enjoy, and understand. Last night on Twitter, people were already criticizing Childish Gambino‘s Because the Internet, which is an album that I’ll need at least a week of consistent listening to understand. And that’s the problem. I feel like people don’t want to understand anymore, and lately I have become obsessed with understanding. See, I sound like my grandmother now. I don’t know which way of thinking is right or wrong, but I’m starting to understand what my grandma’s talking about.

Something you tossed out is everything I want, something you’re dismissive of is the reason I wake up…
Okay, I know it is a Saturday, but today is also June 1st a.k.a. the beginning of the summer months. Did you really expect me to drop a summer mixtape on any other day? Welcome to Summer is the perfect driving-with-the-windows-down mixtape. Like, that is the sole reason I made it. Whether you’re rolling into town blasting RL Grime‘s remix of Chief Keef (making eye contact with the old lady in the car next to you at a stoplight) or just shouting the lyrics of Planetarian‘s “Swim” at the top of your lungs as you cruise down the interstate, this mix works. Plus, how legendary is the sequence of Chance The Rapper into Reggie Watts into Chief Keef into Disclosure?

You daydream about the sea, and I daydream you’ll be mine,
Underneath the shade of leaves, stars over the trees,
Spending a whole summer with you that sounds alright, I’ll,
Meet you in the evening so we can swim tonight
P.S. In case you missed it I made a promo video for this tape. First ever, very rare.
This morning I woke up with a headache because…well, I just did. And if you ask me, that’s a shitty start to what could be an otherwise glorious day. So what did I do? I hopped over to the always great HillyDilly.com in search of some relaxing tunes to tone down the pain. Luckily, I stumbled upon this gem by Different Sleep, featuring a sweet sample of Drake’s Francis and the Lights-assisted track “Karaoke.” Stream/download it below. I think it just saved my day.
I was only trying to get ahead, but the spotlight makes you nervous.
I sit reclined and as the fan above circulates cool air towards me below, the looming weekend promises nothing but relaxation. This is alright with me though for I have had enough crazy weekends, foggy memories, and paternity scares for this year. Yep for the next three days, including today, I am going to sit back and watch the clouds drift by. No alcohol, bumping against sweaty bodies at clubs, or failed attempts of flirtation with the cute girl at the bar. Just me, my dog, and a little of Francis and the Lights as my Friday evening soundtrack.
So to those whose weekends promise havoc, mayhem, and general joyous disorder I say: “Have fun”
To those who, like me, will be sitting back and chillaxing: “Send me whatever song or songs that are serving as the soundtrack for your weekend. Remember that sharing is caring”
