florence + the machine
It’s been far too long since Florence + the Machine’s last release and it’s about time there’s a taste of what’s to come. They seem to be taking a big approach with their return. “What Kind of Man” is a beautiful display of hurt, passion and all the incredible emotions that make the most powerful music. This track will be featured on their newest album which will be released in June of this year. Check out the video for “What Kind of Man” below.
As one of my favorite music festivals (if not my very favorite), ACL, rounds the corner, I sadly realized that this is the first year in three that I have not written for the festival. It’s a sad realization, but one that comes to no surprise of my own. Time is a precious thing these days, and sadly there isn’t much that I can devote to festivals. That said, I still it in me to find time to put together a suggested schedule for all my friends and readers who are lucky enough to go to Austin City Limits this year!
For me, festivals aren’t a time to get up super early and wait in line to get into the gates. I’d rather get my sleep and rest up for a full day of music and sun. Luckily, the best performers typically aren’t put on in the morning, with an exception this year. My new favorite band of the moment, Alt-J, is performing Sunday morning, and I would absolutely make the trek out early to see them perform. Other than that, here’s my suggested schedule with some sample MP3s for ACL 2012.
Friday October 12
Start your day off slow with Patrick Watson. You may need to ease into the ACL experience. You have a full weekend ahead. You wont have to pick up your pace too quickly with this schedule — Delta Spirit into Ben Howard and either a break or Tegan and Sara will ease you into the experience, but the energy will pick up with your arrival at Alabama Shakes. Then Florence + The Machine…if you haven’t seen her live yet, just wait. Your mind will be blown by the insanity of her vocal pipes. And you can’t really go wrong with M83 or The Black Keys. What a Friday.
- 1:30 – 2:30 Patrick Watson (MP3: “Great Escape” – Patrick Watson“)
- 2:15 – 3:15 Delta Spirit
- 3:15-4:15 Ben Howard
- 4:30-5:30 Break or check out Tegan and Sara
- 5:30 – 6:30 Alabama Shakes
- 6:30 – 7:30 Florence + The Machine (MP3: “Swimming” – Florence + The Machine)
- 7:30 – 8:30 M83
- 8:30 – 10:00 The Black Keys
- 1:15 – 2 Bombay Bicycle Club
- 2:00 – 2:45 Dry the River (MP3: “History Book” – Dry the River)
- 3:00 – 4:00 Oberhofer (close pick over K.R.I.T.) (MP3: “ooOOOOooo” – Oberhofer)
- 4:00 – 5:00 Andrew Bird
- Break, or go check out Big Gigantic if you’re ambitious
- 6:00 – 7:00 Kishi Bashi or The Shins…both are great. Take your pick. (MP3: “I Am The Antichrist To You” – Kishi Bashi)
- 7:00 – 8:00 Gotye
- 8:00 – 9:00 Jack White (Neil Young is a dead man walking. At this hour, you’ll fall asleep.)
Sunday, October 14
Sunday is the day I’d be most excited for if I could attend ACL this year. The lineup is incredible. It starts with one of my favorite bands of 2012, Alt-J, and before closing with Red Hot Chili Peppers, you get to see gems like The Lumineers, The Avett Brothers, and Childish Gambino. Sadly I’ve never gotten to see them live, but I have never heard anything but absolute praise for The Avett Brothers’ live show. It’s supposed to be one of the best of our time. All of these sets should be ones that stick with you forever, so if you must do anything over the course of the weekend, please do yourself a favor and stay for the whole day on Sunday. Then go ahead and thank me later.
- 11:30 – 12:15 Alt-J
- 12:15 – 1:15 The Boxer Rebellion (MP3: “Locked in the Basement” – The Boxer Rebellion)
- 1:15 – 2:15 Freelance Whales
- 2:15 – 3:15 Gary Clark Jr. (MP3: “The Life” – Gary Clark Jr.)
- 3:15 – 4:15 Tennis
- 4:15 – 5:15 Two Door Cinema Club (close call over The Civil Wars)
- 5:00 – 5:45 The Lumineers (sad to say it, but you have to skip The Weeknd to run to see The Avett Brothers) (MP3: “Classy Girls [B-Side Version] – The Lumineers)
- 6:15 – 7:30 The Avett Brothers (MP3: “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full Of Promise” – The Avett Brothers)
- 7:30 – 8:15 Childish Gambino
- 8:15 Red Hot Chili Peppers
So this has been around for a couple of weeks, but an MP3 of the cover just surfaced so I figured now would be a good time to post.
Anyways, Florence. Girl kills me. First time I heard this it had a pretty powerful effect on me, and I was really taken aback by the power Florence has in her voice. Kind of just blows you away, ya know?
I gave Drake’s “Take Care” a controversially positive review, and while that’s up for debate, the fact that Florence + The Machine killed this cover is not.
Imagine a Florence/Drake collaboration! Damn.
I’ve embedded both Florence’s cover and Drake’s original–let me know which you like more in the comments! I’m curious. As great as this is, Drake’s still takes the cake for me; but, Florence’s is live and not superficially produced, so I gotta give my girl props for that.
Head over to Pigeons and Planes to see the video of Florence performing the cover live.
I really like taking completely different songs and putting them together into one cohesive mix. I think I did that with this mix. It starts out with a cool electronic indie song followed immediately by an experimental rap song, but how different are they really? Both feature hollowed out production that sounds like they were recorded in either a shower or a cave. Next, you get a song from Summer Camp’s excellent debut Welcome to Condale. That’s followed by an instrumental from DJ Sabzi, the production half of Blue Scholars. Both songs share similar melodies (the whistle on “Last American Virgin” and the synth line on “Trailer Park Bazaar”). I think throughout the mix you’re given these interesting pairings that ultimately form a killer series of songs. That was the idea, anyway.
We used to hold hands like field trips. Preview the mix below.
- Dems – Down On You
- Cities Aviv – W E T D R E A M
- Summer Camp – Last American Virgin
- Sabzi – Trailer Park Bazaar
- Rizzle Kicks – Traveller’s Chant
- Kisses – Johnny and Mary (Robert Palmer Cover)
- Ghost Beach – Empty Streets
- Strange Talk – Sexual Lifestyle
- Coastal Cities – Think Tank
- Iggy Uriarte – So Hard
- Rihanna – You Da One
- ZAKEE – Dope Girl
- Louque – Art
- A Cool Stick – Water
- Alex Clare – Caroline
- Dems – House
- Florence + the Machine – Only if for a Night
This is heaven.
This mixtape has a reprise. So neat y’all.
Ugh, come on, Arjun! Cut the crap! Let’s not play games. Tell it to us straight.
FINE, loyal fans and Twitter followers and real life followers (crazy people), this is a really good mix. It’s short, but it does its job; it tells a story. It has some rock and some weird fusion R&B à la the ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ mix. It contains zero hip-hop. No rap. Sorry. I’ll make it up to you. Soon-ish.
The mix shows bits and pieces of me. “Cover Girl” is my favorite song right now. “It’s Going” is one of my favorite sad songs of all time. “Time” is my epic song of the moment, and arguably, one of the most epic songs ever created. “Stay Gold” is simply my jam; same with its remix. “Breaking Down” is not my favorite song from Florence + the Machine’s Ceremonials, but it works here in all its Arcade Fire-esque glory. Finally, “Berlin” is just a bundle of fun (like Ferbie!). Look for more fun stuff on the next mix.
In the meantime, download ‘stay gold/cover girl’, and stay gold, cover girl.
- The Big Pink – Stay Gold
- Mr Hudson & The Library – Cover Girl
- Joker – On My Mind
- Monarchy – You Don’t Want To Dance With Me (Deep Space Acoustic Version)
- How to Dress Well – Suicide Dream 2 (Elite Gymnastics Baptism)
- John Gold – It’s Going
- Siobhan Wilson – Getting Me Down
- The Big Pink – Stay Gold (Reprise) (AraabMUSIK Remix)
- Mr Hudson – Time
- Florence + the Machine – Breaking Down
- Is Tropical – Berlin
Heard this song cut, mashed and mixed dozens of times, but never like this. Sexy vibrations and some subtle, dubsteppy wobbles, this one was definitely made for those times where you can turn up the bass and put the volume a touch louder than your comfort zone. Check it:
“Swimming” – Florence + The Machine
It is hot as balls in North Carolina. I took a picture of the thermometer in my car yesterday, and it said 114 degrees. And that doesn’t even account for the humidity. How I would love to just jump in the ocean and swim to nowhere. When people ask if I would rather be a bird or a fish, I really have trouble with that one. I feel like most people say a bird, because flying would just be unlike anything else, but I think I lean towards fish. I just love the thought of being underwater. I love fish tanks. I love snorkling. And I love this song by Florence + The Machine.
And then I realized I was swimming…
MUSIC VIDEO: “Cosmic Love” – Florence + The Machine
I’m rather upset with myself for not getting more into Florence + The Machine sooner, but hey…never too late. The best way to describe her talent is likely to say she’s got some incredible pipes. That’s what everybody’s saying, so yeah yeah…it’s not original, but that’s really what needs to be said. Her vocals are just flat out incredible. I didn’t get to see much more than 15 minutes of her show at Coachella because I was making sure I had a good spot for Jonsi, but I hear it was absolutely awesome. Hopefully I’ll catch her live again sometime. Anyway, if you’re not too familiar with her, here’s a music video (very well done, as well) of her song Cosmic Love, and if you want a closer listen to her voice, below is the acoustic version. Tell me that aint talent!
