The name “Waves” came way before I found the song “Waves” by the incredible Aussie artist Japanese Wallpaper. I was reading about Jackson Sonnanfeld-Arden’s philosophy (introduced to me by Deru) about these Nine Pure Tones, or waves, that serve as the basis of all life and existence. It was a riveting read that has since been taken down from the Internet, and it was just crazy enough to sort of blow my mind and maybe influence my entire life.
You hear about how we’re the most informed generation, but how much of that information are we actually implementing in our behavior? Are we constantly having our behaviors and ideas reaffirmed by seeking comfort in niche sections of the Internet, which monitor our searches to customize the ads we see–only further reaffirming our behaviors? Or are we seeking and interpreting new ideas and incorporating them into our ever-changing social dynamics?
So these have been my thoughts and questions the past two months. You can see how “waves” could work as a metaphor for the ebb and flow of life. And the philosophy takes it like a zillion steps further by defining all science and behaviors in nine different waves. So yeah, um, that was the idea for the mixtape. Also, I just wanted to make your soundtrack for the beginning of summer.
She wears my favorite color, everyday in her eyes…
*Not including track 16 (“Berlin” by Highlands) and track 20 (“Mad at Me” by Sage The Gemini).
WOOOOO I LOVE THIS. Out of nowhere Kanye jumped onto Big Brother‘s and Big Brother’s Wife‘s track and actually had a better verse than Jay, to be honest. So I guess we should prepare to be hearing college girls/girls in their 20s singing this for a while. Don’t totally hate it. That said, never forget Kanye’s “Ego (Remix)” verse.

I feel like everyone numbs themselves to something. It’s like Louis CK said on Conan last September cell phones are a perfect way of subconsciously ignoring true and real and beautiful feelings. So I set out to make a mixtape to draw out those emotions and prevent any possibility of numbness. If this were an episode of Friends, “CDs for a Broken Record” is “The One Where Every Song Kills.”

Drake just dropped this gem a minute ago via the OVO SoundCloud, and defying all sorts of time and space, it is already basically the most played song in my iTunes. Is that embarrassing? That has always confused me about Aubrey. A lot of people acknowledge that he is one of the best living rappers, but maybe his candidness and pregnant-white-lady-level of emotions and hyper specific hot tea preferences (probably) make some feel embarrassed to listen to him. It’s a weird complex of my generation. But anyway, enough ‘attacking issues of my generation head on’ from me; let’s focus on the music. Over a Destiny’s Child-sampling beat, Drizzy discusses the current state of his love life and his lack of trust towards ‘new friends.’ It’s like high school all over again for Wheelchair Jimmy*.
*I’m not trying to be mean! It’s just too easy. He was in a wheelchair on a Canadian teen drama!
Bonus! Drake also dropped a sort-of “Started from the Bottom” remix featuring Rick Ross and Lil Wayne and I guess it’s actually DJ Khaled’s song but he’s not important at all.
Is it just me, or does Beyonce have some Kanye West flair in her vocals on this Hit Boy and Timbaland-produced track? I was reminded of why Beyonce is untouchable during the Super Bowl Halftime Show. She and the girls killed it. I think I almost cried…that’s how inspired I was. But then she comes out with this track, and I’m worried that she’s going through the same phase that Jay-Z seemed to hit a couple years ago. Specifically, a mid-life crisis whereby they realize that they’re getting old and they aren’t keeping up with the times like the other artists. So they drastically change the sound that got them to the point they’re at today, and suddenly they seem like they’re no longer ahead of the pack–they’re simply trying to keep up. So yeah, I’m not digging the sound.
But fuck all that criticism, she’s singing about H-Town, so I’m down. Texas Trill!
When people or God made the word “cool,” this is what they had in mind (maybe). One of our favorite bands The Neighbourhood recently dug up these ’90s classics and mashed them up into really probably a perfect cover.
Destiny’s Child + Justin Timberlake + The Neighbourhood = perfection + this blog post + tears + hospitalization + hair loss – constipation / saliva + no friends + tennis elbow – tennis – elbow
According to the news and stuff, Beyoncé gave birth to Ivy Blue Carter (@IvyBlueCarter) this Saturday night in a New York hospital. I thought because this birth is so important to the future of the world I would take it upon myself to map out Ivy Blue Carter’s entire life.
*Edit: Last night, the news and stuff got it wrong. The power couple’s daughter was actually named Blue Ivy Carter, which is so much worse it’s ridiculous. Also, apparently they chose the name “Ivy” because it’s kind of like “IV” or the Roman numeral for 4, which is significant to both Jay and Bey–their birthdays are on December 4th and September 4th, respectively, and they were married on April 4th, 2008. So basically, I’m slowly losing faith in the human race.
By age 1, Ivy will build her own espresso machine like Kato in the Green Hornet.
By age 5, Ivy will lead coup in Tunisia because she feels that the people are not being represented properly and stuff that makes coups happen.
By age 6, Ivy will be both an adjective and a verb.
By age 10, Ivy will direct and star in her own major motion picture. It will go on to win 7 Grammys.
By age 15, Ivy will be Will Smith’s daughter.
By age 20, Ivy will cure cancer–or only the kind that less than .01% of cancer patients have.
By age 30, Ivy will marry not one, but two Brazilian oxen.
By age 40, Ivy will buy Facebook and rename it The Facebook because she’s fucking inventive.
By age 50, Ivy will decide not to be 50 and will go back to being 40.
By age 50 (Actual age 60), Ivy will purchase the rights to the color blue.
Ivy will never die but will suffer greatly from Swag Syndrome.
Fuck that, she does die but will be reincarnated as another Ivy Blue Carter because that’s how awesome she was the first time.
I was in the hospital all morning and am having just about the worst week of my life so I’m going to keep this short and sweet, but I couldn’t let my loyal wompers go without their Wednesday dose. I hope you guys will enjoy anyway – Nick
This is a filthy little blend of Sean Paul and Beyonce with The Glitch Mob put together by a producer out of Boulder, which seems to be the EDM capitol of the country right now. The grimy bass in this one really gets people going, and recognizing the original pop song from Sean Paul and Beyonce turned into an absolutely filthy remix.

I posted a Love + Light Remix of The Police’s “Roxanne” last week, and they’ve got another great remix of a classic that they just released that was too good not to post. It always really impresses me when an artist can take a well known song, or in this case what I would consider a classic (one of RHCP’s best, in my opinion) and put it into a completely new context, while still respecting the original. This one has some parts that are largely just the original, some parts that take nothing from the original, and a lot of parts that are awesome blends of old and new. Look out for Love + Light, if they keep this up they’re going to be all over the place.
