Sonny and the Sunsets – Reflections on Youth
A song called “Reflections on Youth” by Sonny and the Sunsets? I mean, seriously, how much more topical could it get? Obviously I love sunsets, and I feel like half of what I do here in my writing is reflect on my youth. I mean, why wouldn’t I? Childhood was the shit. If I could pay money to go back to Kindergarten, I DEFINITELY would. The days when I took gymnastics, which consisted of jumping around in pits of styrofoam blocks? Or naps during school? Those were the good days. I swear it doesn’t get much better than that.
More about the band: Sonny Smith was a patient at a hospital in Texas and began to sing one day, just to keep the other patients entertained. Soon after being released from the hospital, he formed a band with his brother and wife, and his sound has been tagged by the press as a ‘pop supernaturalist.’ Hard to say what that really means, but it reflects on his topics of choice, which include hypnotherapy, extrasensory perception, fortune tellers, palm readers…the list goes on. After playing with his band for a week, he left and moved to San Francisco, only to find himself once again back in psychiatric care. While at the clinic, he met Kelley Stoltz, a drummer, and he reunited with his old band, adding Stoltz to the mix. For the past three years, they’ve been living out of a van, recording and performing their songs. This song, “Reflections on Youth,” is one of the results.
