[Album Review] Sol – Yours Truly

The first track I ever heard from Seattle emcee, Sol, was “This Shit.” I thoroughly enjoyed that track, but to me, that wasn’t enough to fully convert me to a fan. Eventually, “Stage Dive” reached my computer, and I’m thinking, okay, Sol is starting to catch on. Finally, I watched “2020″ on YouTube, and the rest is history. I’m convinced. Sol is awesome.
Yours Truly has about 15 plays on my computer, so I think I’ve listened to it plenty to formulate my thoughts about it. The past few days, Yours Truly has been my music I listen to when I walk to class. During these walks, I’ve been keeping mental notes about what I thought in hopes I would have enough material to write a convincing review on why you should support this guy on iTunes. I wrote down bullet points on a note card, and that’s how I’m going to deliver it to you.
- Tends to rap about women (Love), weed, and his life
- Easy on the ears (Instrumentals and voice)
- Catchy choruses
- Tweet worthy lyrics (Those lyrics that would always be used as Facebook statuses but are now used on Twitter instead)
- Keeps it real
- Easy to relate to
Sol touches on relationships and love multiple times, and I think it’s safe to say that’s his favorite topic to rap about. One of the standout tracks, “Ugly Love,” is a great example of this. I fuckin’ (I swear to emphasize) love that song. Why? Because I can relate to it. It’s an easy method for artists to reel in fans. Just keep it real.
“We’ve all had that one that we just lust. We’ve all had that one that we didn’t trust. We’ve all had that someone we fiend too much. Yeah, we call that ugly love.” *tweet worthy*
“Someday we’ll get it right…” *tweet worthy*
“Need Your Love” is another stand out track that showcases Sol’s soft side and ability to slow things down.
Now he isn’t just all about the girls. Take “Rap Life” and “Stage Dive” for instance. He raps about living the rap life and the best parts of it. And the chorus on Rap Life is tooooo raw.
“Loving every single second of it even when it’s rough” – Stage Dive
“So we live life, like we can die from it/So we stage dive like we can get high from it.” – Stage Dive
“I’ve known rappers living out the back of their cars. Not exactly the rap life that you would of thought.” – Rap Life
Sol has crafted one hell of an album. I’ll recommend this to any hip-hop head. Two days ago, I was walking back from class late in the day and no one was around, so I had some bonding time with Sol, rapping along with him, singing those choruses, and thinking like, damn, this guy seems chill and cool. Just a heads up, I didn’t even talk about my favorite track “2020” in this review, and he should take that as a compliment. That’s how impressive Yours Truly is.
Jordan’s Favorite Tracks: 2020, Ugly Love, Need Your Love, Paint, Stage Dive, Rap Life…hell at this point, the whole thing.
Album Rating: I don’t normally like to give ratings because I don’t think a number represents albums that well, but according to my iTunes, it gets a 9.2/10.
“Talk is cheap.” – Budo’s Interlude (only lyrics in the song)
“If you love life, don’t ever let it waste ya’ll.” – Paint *tweet worthy*
“Do what you love to do. Love who will love you too.” – The Rundown *tweet worthy*
