A blog showcasing musical potential, talent, and prowess.

This blog serves to expand your musical knowledge. I will try to open your eyes to new and different artists and genres of music. Though I tend to post hip-hop music, I certainly post other genres as well, including electronic, pop, indie, folk, hip-pop, and more. If you have comments, suggestions, or questions, please email me at lydia [dot] simmons [at] gmail.

About me:

My name is Lydia. I recently graduated from Duke University and I initially started this blog as a way to organize new music that I found and loved. As it began to develop, I found myself with a growing number of fans and an addiction to finding and posting. It now serves as not only an organizational tool for me, but also a fun way for me to spread the word about lesser-known music of all genres to the masses near and far.

Beyond the obvious of loving music, I love issues surrounding human rights, social justice, and civil rights. I am an avid NBA fan. I love traveling and reading. And I can proudly admit that I love when people spread the word about my blog.

Some of my favorite artists:

PMA has hooked us up with the mp3 for the newest MGMT song called “Flash Delirium.” It’s a great follow-up to Oracular Spectacular, though many were caught wondering how they would do so. It’s not quite the party track that others on OS were, but it’s definitely a keeper.

Here’s a somewhat mystical song from Neon Indian. It’s a free single released today by Green Label Sound, and it’s blowing up! Good music right here.

Download “Sleep Paralysist”

The Morning Benders released their EP, Big Echo (produced by Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor), today, and “Excuses” is the opening track. This performance is brilliant. Basically, The Morning Benders teamed up with all different musicians out of San Francisco (including Christopher Owens of Girls, John Vanderslice, and more, stuffed them all into a small studio to create an orchestra-like sound, and recorded this beautiful song. The idea was originally created by Phil Spector…see note below:

Another beautiful song from Jonsi. Every song that leaks continues to amaze me. I could listen to his music again and again and again until I slipped away into a meadow of rolling hills, blue skies, and chirping birds. Is that what Iceland is? Is that his inspiration? Anxiously awaiting the album (called Go) release on April 6th.

I know this dropped last night, and in the blogging world, that’s borderline unacceptable reaction time, but I had to let it sink in before blogging in. I’m just not sure how I feel about it. But that’s how I feel about Drake’s music most of the time. It’ll grow on me, but it isn’t right off the bat that I’m able to say I love this. I will say, though, I like how Drake keeps me guessing on what words he’ll use to rhyme…most rappers will say something and I’ll think to myself, okay, the last word of the next line is going to be “[enter simple word],” but Drake keeps it dynamic and chooses words the typical rapper wouldn’t have thought of. That keeps it really appealing to me.

Anyway, here’s the joint, I’d be happy to hear yalls opinions on it. It doesn’t sound like a single to me!

If you haven’t noticed, it isn’t often that I advertise good causes here on this blog. But when it really means something to me, I’ll do it. A couple of my friends have put countless hours and effort in to design a project as a branch of Discover Worlds, a non-profit started by one of the friends. ChangEducate aims to produce and film an educational DVD on poverty and civic engagement, and distribute these DVDs along with lesson plans and curriculum to high schools nationwide. By doing so, they hope to educate students on poverty’s causes, perpetuators, and solutions. Further, they hope to engage high school students in service learning and social entrepreneurship.

What you may not know about me is that in college I designed my own major in Human Rights, but rather than taking the path of Law, I focused instead on poverty (from a non-legal standpoint). Thus, this project is obviously near and dear to my interests. I also know that it is being run by great people, and will most definitely be implemented. The leader of the group, Anjali, started the non-profit Discover Worlds when she was 15 years old because she was disheartened by the fact that so many people were unmoved by the issue of poverty. So what did she do? She acted. She started a non-profit to educate people about poverty and what they could do to act against it. It is now an international non-profit. She trained a team of educators in Rwanda.

Now, with the power of the DVD they plan to make, this effort could really take off! Help visit the competition site and vote for their idea! You can vote once a day for an effort, and voting ends March 31st. I really encourage you to do so. A good cause is so much more powerful when it’s run by trustworthy people, and I can tell you for a fact that this one is!

It only takes a second…why not, right?

Vote here for ChangEducate

Video: “Not Love” - B.o.B

So after that cheesy post, I figured I needed to post something a little bit harder. A little bit of hip hop. For all yall out there who keep telling me to post more hip hop (you know who you are), hopefully this one will make you laugh. Macklemore mixes it up a bit on this one, and I like it. Once again I turn to one of my favorite producers in the game, Ryan Lewis, for some good music.

One time I forwarded an email to an entire listserv and my family. I clearly wasn’t thinking very straight. My mom replies to almost every email she receives…of course she would reply to this one. And my mom was born before computers…of course she doesn’t really know to check what the difference is between “Reply to sender” and “Reply all.” Next thing I know, my entire sorority listserv got a loving email from my mom beginning with “HI, PEA!!!!!!!” So there you have it. My mom calls me Pea. A little teasing never hurt anybody.

This song, “Pea,” by a group I hadn’t yet heard of, Rabbit!, is doing it for me today. I’ve been in a chipper mood all day, and to say this song doesn’t fall right in line with “chipper,” “alert,” “animated,” “lively,” “spirited,” and all of its other synonyms that thesaurus.com is giving me would be foolish. If you can handle the pop-driven major chords and picture-perfect lyrics, you might dig this song too. Be forewarned: if you cringe at the thought of cheesiness in music, you may shrivel up and die when you hear this. But hey, if that’s the case, you probably couldn’t survive the last few minutes of Juno either…and I say that’s your loss.

David Guetta) - Kid Cudi

Just realized I never posted this music video. As I’m counting down the days until I have floor seating at the Cudder/N.E.R.D. concert, I felt guilty for not having posted this yet. If you for some rather bizarre reason don’t have the song in your iTunes, go away. No, I’m only slightly kidding…I’ll provide it, I suppose. The things I do for you people. (I’m being sarcastic, I don’t want anybody jumping on me all whiney and ish with their “bloggers are volunteers” nonsense. Sarcastic.) Cheers, mateys!

This kid “Big Z” is remixing the hell out of some hip hop songs, turning them into light listening while still being head nodders. On top of that, all the sudden you can hear Jay-Z and Biggie on the same track together. Basically you’re putting delicious ingredients together in a blender and coming out with a dank smoothie. Keep up the good work, Big Z! He’s got a whole little tape put together, and other artists he’s remixed on it include Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, Nas, Dead Prez, Kanye, Tupac, among others. Get on it.

If you do know the song, you’ll appreciate this video a little bit more I think. So cool.
