A blog showcasing musical potential, talent, and prowess.

This blog serves to expand your musical knowledge. I will try to open your eyes to new and different artists and genres of music. Though I tend to post hip-hop music, I certainly post other genres as well, including electronic, pop, indie, folk, hip-pop, and more. If you have comments, suggestions, or questions, please email me at lydia [dot] simmons [at] gmail.

About me:

My name is Lydia. I recently graduated from Duke University and I initially started this blog as a way to organize new music that I found and loved. As it began to develop, I found myself with a growing number of fans and an addiction to finding and posting. It now serves as not only an organizational tool for me, but also a fun way for me to spread the word about lesser-known music of all genres to the masses near and far.

Beyond the obvious of loving music, I love issues surrounding human rights, social justice, and civil rights. I am an avid NBA fan. I love traveling and reading. And I can proudly admit that I love when people spread the word about my blog.

Some of my favorite artists:

While we’re on the topic of Smokey Robinson (a la Curren$y’s mixtape title), why not post a classic Smokey Robinson! Such a beautiful song. It randomly came on shuffle during my drive home from work and I thought I NEED TO POST THIS TODAY. I’m in a loving mood, what can I say. Plus, sunset doesn’t get much R&B or Motown loving, so I figured this was appropriate! Enjoy!

Open up your eyes, Then you’ll realize, Here I stand with my everlasting love

At first I wondered why they spelled “always” wrong in the song title. Then, I listened to the lyrics. “I see it all the ways that I can.” Makes more sense. I digress. This band sent me some of their music to check out. In the package came four songs and cover art. I loved every song and wanted more! This here song is just a sip out of a large mug of deliciousness. I love the use of hymnal humming (forgive me for making up terms…it’s what I do at times) behind the calming and smooth voice of the main singer. The drums complement the song perfectly, and as you may know…I don’t tend to pay much attention to drums. Overall, it’s perfect proportions of instrumentals, blended with a voice that soothes my ears, and the end equation is exactly what I was looking for today. Thanks, guys!

This just in: I have been introduced to a new band: The Love Language. The main singer is incredible. His voice is absolutely breathtaking. Powerful and loud, yet clear and serene. Can one thing encompass all of those positive adjectives? Through listening, I have learned that it can. While I wait for some more mp3s of The Love Language, enjoy this one!

I’m looking for a hand to guide me far away from the rest

I love how Solange knew she had to be different so that she could step out of the shadow of her older sister Beyonce…so she totally took the hipster/indie route. They tend to use a lot of amazing samples in their music, which is the first thing that hooked me. Though there is a possibility that this music may only appeal to the super hipsters out there, it could potentially reach out to people just looking to kick it and enjoy watching the Visualizer feature on their iTunes. I think I could describe this music as drippy and trippy. Interpret as you will. Maybe it’s just easier to give it a listen and see what you think for yourself. “Mind, Drips” is an amazing song. “Psychic Chasms” was my other favorite off of their latest LP. Oh and how could I nearly forget…the cubism-inspired artwork off the album cover is simply delightful.

I was watching High Fidelity last night (great movie, by the way) and this song came on at the very end, and for the life of me I can’t recall what it reminds me of. But I can tell you this-it’s one of those songs that triggers some type of memory from my past. You have to love those ones. If you haven’t heard this one yet, give it a listen…it might get to you.

Kid Cudi with a Bob Dylan sample? Yes pleeeeease. This is actually an older joint of his (from like 3-4 years ago), but it was never released with decent quality, so it was released today in good quality, and I’m loving it. Consistent with Cudder’s usual act of rhyming about struggles, this one talks about his highs and lows. Once again, I relate to Cudi’s lyrics delivered in his unique voice, topped with a tiny bit of a lisp (if you can call it that), that just seems to calm me down about life in general.

Now won’t you please save Scotty low…won’t you please, God, help me please

Lordy lordy this is a spectacular music video. I love the creativity that went into this. It’s all shot in a movie trailer format, but like…a movie from the 50’s or something. I wonder, when they came up with this idea, who was able to say…I will be able to do that and keep it interesting for a good 3 or so minutes (however long the song is). Whoever it was, they did it. Props to them!

I tend not to like using expletives on the blog, but the song title includes a word. (Irony…I have quite a dirty mouth, but don’t like to publicize it?) This may be my favorite song off the mixtape, although let me tell you it’s hard to choose…there are lots of great songs on this mixtape. (Be sure to also check out “The Rain”, “Out of Time” … and all the others, ha.) But, VERY Dope production by Mr. West, and good rapping from both Bobby Ray and Asher Roth. You never know who’s going to drop a rhyme, they keep you guessing. Enjoy, and download the mixtape!

MIXTAPE: "May 25th" - B.o.B

The other songs on their Free EP were a bit too intense rock for me, but this one blends a bit of reggae sound, hip hop, and rock.

One of my favorite voices and songs out there. The raspy whisper speaks to me. Classic heartwarmer. Just what I needed :)

Ray has an interesting life history. He was the son of an abusive musician, so he decided not to go into music until a later inspiration. He barely graduated from high school-his grades were poor, he often got into fights with other students, but when he got out he got a full time job. After hearing a Stephen Stills song, he decided to pursue music. All I can say is thank goodness he did, because this song hardly ever fails to put a smile on my face.

I know I do this a lot, and if it bothers you, pardon me (though I actually can’t admit to caring too much…because I’m doing what I like to do). But I’m once again posting Cudder performing live, because…damn the man…he gets to me every time! Music isn’t music without putting emotions into your songs. That is what Kid Cudi does, and my god it makes me melt. You can watch this video, see how solemn and mellow he looks during the majority of the song, and when it gets to the part where he’s like…screw yall, I made it…he just explodes and shows everybody what a blast he’s having. Thank you, the end.

MUSIC VIDEO: “Oh Canada” - Classified

Classified, great rapper out of Canada, just finished shooting his music video for his song “Oh Canada” off his 2009 album called Self Explanatory. This is a personal shout out to my big fanbase out in Calgary-thanks for being such great fans. On that note, however, did yall see the pregnant lady with the Maple Leaf painted on her stomach? Please don’t ever do that.

Sorry for being MIA. Been a minute, back up in it. Anyway…here we’ve got Chip rhyming, sounding at times a bit like Andre 3000, over a beautifully peaceful beat. Great production by 6th Sense. Could be one of my favorites of the month. Cannot wait for some Cudi and Chip collaborations.
