“Against A Mad World” (ft. Tupac & Tears for Fears) - Brenton Duvall

Brenton Duvall | Sunset in the Rearview

What do you get when you put Tears for Fears and Tupac in a song together? I guess since we’re in the age of Mashups, that just doesn’t sound that crazy. But I’ll tell you what sounds crazy: this song by Brenton Duvall. It’s not just your regular mashup, it’s more than that. It’s got personality! It’s got Brenton Duvall’s touch and flavor! It’s good. I’m definitely digging it. But hey, I always love me some Tupac.

Anyway, if you like it too, be sure to become a fan of Brenton Duvall on Facebook and check out his Soundcloud where you can hear more of his music.

Tom Weir is Ghost Waves

GhostWaves, real name Tom Weir, is the fresh take on what he calls Americana. He is Big Beat, he is Pop, and, in my opinion, kin to nothing you have ever heard before. His tracks are both beachy and, with obscure lyrics echoing throughout, ambient.

This is Sunset In The Rearview’s formal introduction of GhostWaves via his debut EP “Stay Wavy.”  There will probably be no precedent in your music library for this type of music for Tom Weir is GhostWaves and, all genre labels aside, to be compared to nothing else.

“Stay Wavy” is four unique tracks that blend together to form a distinctive and singular taste of what GhostWaves’ future has in store for us. You can download the entire EP here or you can check below for solo download/stream of each track. Be sure to check out “Intro/Night”, by far my favorite, and to let me know if you want to learn more about GhostWaves.

Introducing: German Error Message

Anybody else feel like low quality is taking over today’s indie music scene? I don’t mean poor quality, I mean low quality. Whether it’s lo-fi music or these hipster-infused photos, it’s everywhere. But it’s cool, I’m eating it up just as much as the next person.

Anyway, I’ve got some new music by a dude who goes by the name of German Error Message. His music is experimental folk that’s really soothing. Light picking on guitar and beautiful chord progressions on the piano make up the majority of his gentle composition.

If you like what you hear, you can download the entire album for free over on his webpage.

Arcade Fire Interactive Music Video…Might Be The Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread

This interactive video set to Arcade Fire’s “We Used To Wait” has basically just destroyed the term “raising the bar.” Because, quite frankly, they have taken the bar and thrown it out the window, into a swamp full of bar-eating bacteria. That way, nobody can ever reach that bar again.

In all honesty, though, this is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a long time. Basically what this director Chris Milk has done, alongside some of his friends from Google Chrome and the members of Arcade Fire, is create a story with the song that is centered around the home you grew up in. And without ruining the experience for you, I’ll just put it this way - don’t just expect to see an aerial view of your city or neighborhood. It gets personal. It’s amazing.

The team recommends that you close other browsers and windows for this experience. I demand that you close everything and don’t be alarmed by different windows popping up. Also, don’t make the mistake I made and start moving windows around so you can see all of them. It does all the work for itself.

Enjoy this. It’s a masterpiece. If some crazy scientist is ever able to recreate and raise the bar that has now been dissolved into nothing, then that just says it all right there - ANYTHING is possible.

“Monster” - Kanye West ft. Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, & Bon Iver

I’m sure if many of yall are avid music blog followers, you may have already heard this one. But since I’m not typically able to be the first to post a popular song given the fact that I have a day job, here’s for those of you who haven’t heard it yet. Or who maybe just wanted my opinion on it :) Nah, I’m not that arrogant.

But for real. Wait one second. Kanye West said he was cooking up some heat with Bon Iver, but I did not know he meant this sort of heat! This is crazy! Are you familiar with Bon Iver? Here’s a link to what might be my favorite song of his. Please, do yourself a favor and listen to that song for a second. Okay, you good? You listened? Alright, now let’s get back to this “Monster” track. Where in the WORLD did this come from?

Must say, when I first heard the beat, I thought…mmhm, this sounds JUST like a beat that Nikki Minaj would be on. But then came her verse. And Good Lawd Almighty, I was blown away! I mean, GIRL! If you’re reading this, let me just say, I am sorry. Perhaps I underestimated you. I had good expectations, but your performance blew those out of the water! Moreover, Nickigirl, the things you do with that voice of yours never cease to amaze me-keep doing your thing-I’ll keep listening. And crushing.

As for the other verses? Fine. Good, I suppose. But nothing like my girl Nicki’s. She wins this one.

Weird Music Videos Becoming…Normal?

Things are getting weird in the Land of Music Videos. It seems it’s becoming trendy (and no, that is not statistically correct to say, because it’s only 2 that I know of) to center music videos around the death of imaginary animals that serve as pets. First Yeasayer shocked the world with their music video for “Madder Red,” which features Kristen Bell mourning over the loss of her strange, and rather revolting-looking pet. As grossed out as I first was, I found myself moved by the direction and the storyline.

Next thing I knew, I finally got around to watching the music video for “Congratulations” by MGMT, and they had the same premise! Too weird. But once again, moving…heartwarming, if you will.

Check it out for yourself and see what you think. Is this weird to you? Do you like one better than the other?

By the way, in getting all of the links for this post, I realized I’m not the first one to associate these two videos with each other. So I apologize for the apparent lack of originality, but how can you not think of one when you see the other?

BONUS: Thanks to a comment from Kathy, I’m now aware of the fact that you can buy the MGMT record on Amazon for only FIVE dollars. Do it. You wont.

Mashup Monday!

And just like that, summer’s over? I’m in denial over here. And I’m not even in school anymore! But that means my Summer Fridays are gone, the peaceful view of Durham is gone, and the colder weather is right around the corner. Okay, so maybe I’m not that sad about the cooler weather. Anyway, another Monday, another Mashup. Enjoy!

“The Indie Queens Are Waiting” - Dan Mangan

I stumbled across this gem tonight, and it’s just what I needed. After a long day in the sun and several domestic errands and chores to do afterwards, I needed a song to wind me down. Dan Mangan, thank you, kind sir. It seems I’m all about the Canadians today, eh? Arcade Fire and now Dan Mangan?

This music reminds me a bit of the male-female pairing sound from Damien Rice + Lisa Hannigan or Joshua Radin + Ingrid Michaelson. Downright delicious.

This song is coming off a re-release of his 2009 album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice, which was under the label File: Under Music. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mr. Mangan really broke into the scene pretty soon.

“Rococo” - Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire "The Suburbs" | Sunset in the Rearview

The release of The Suburbs through Merge Records came and went, and just as I often like to do, I listened and soaked it up right when it came out, then read the incredibly positive reviews, and then let it sit for a few days. Let a tiny bit of dust gather. In fact, let’s not even call it dust, because it wasn’t more than two or three days when Canada’s spectacular rock band was looking at me through the other side of the computer screen whispering, “Here, Lydia. It’s okay! We know you want to.” And want to, I did. So I let myself. I listened and relistened. And it only got better each time.

So now, a couple weeks later, I’m still listening, and I’m finding it to be the perfect time to share one of my favorite songs from the album with all of you. The music is magical, and the melody and harmonizing might just be the descendants of peanut butter and jelly-they are, quite simply, perfect with each other. Play this once, and I dare you not to play it again. If it doesn’t come calling your name in a few days, either get your ears checked, or leave a comment and let me know what you think is wrong. I have yet to find anything, but am open to hearing your opinions.

They seem wild but they are so tame…

“I Walked” - Sufjan Stevens

Following his announcement a few days ago that he will be releasing an album in October, Sufjan Stevens released a track from his new album, The Age of Adz.

It’s been said that the title, “The Age of Adz” references the art of Royal Robertson (1930-1997), a schizophrenic Louisianan sign-maker whose artwork was modeled after his dreams and visions of space aliens, monsters, futuristic cars, and “signs of the Last Judgment.” Some of this artwork, primarily made from poster board, magic markers, and glitter, appears in the album art.

Just as is to be expected with new material from Sufjan, this song is incredible. The band of female choral voices singing in the background perfectly matches his voice in the hazy background. And though I am not always a huge fan of echoing sounds, it just works so well in this song.

Tell me, do you think of me now, as I think of you?
