Wow…this kid just played 32 songs in 8 minutes! Pretty impressive. He links each song together by starting a new song on the same note that the last song finished on…or making a nice transition (sans improvisation) between instrumentals.
What better day than World AIDS Day to promote this video by Travie, where he teams up with the MTV Staying Alive Foundation to support Global HIV Research. I have a pretty strong opinion on the phrase “changing the world,” as people used to always tell me that’s what I wanted to do. Well, aside from the twisted-ness of others telling me what I want to do, what irks me about that is that I don’t necessarily want to change the world. But if I could better the lives of some individuals, I’d call my time here on Earth successful.
This jam, off the Somalian’s The Dusty Foot Philosopher, came on my iPod twice randomly today! Not a huuuuge fan of the hook, but the beat and the rhymes are spectacular. Plus, it’s K’Naan. If you don’t know, you better ask somebody! (…or check the archives of my blog. He’s a very clear favorite over here.)
Last week Sony released their own version of cult online competition “Fantasy Football” so if you can’t pick football players but love music, then you will love Sony’s Fantasy Festival Competition!
It’s is a free, points based league game with an the aim being to assemble the ultimate, imaginary music festival line-up to gain as many points as possible through your acts’ popularity in the real world. That real world is actually calculated by activity online in the game. All hosted with Last.fm.
Users can create custom leagues, invite friends and battle it out for festival supremacy. With the person who creates the highest value Festival, presented with a music lover’s dream prize – four “money can’t buy” tickets (including VIP accommodation, flights and spending money) to one of Europe’s hottest music festivals, plus tonnes of weekly prizes.
It’s a massive opportunity for Sony to create a cult following of sorts in a non-sporting scene so it will be very interesting to see the response to the campaign. By the looks of it, it’s off to a flying start with week 2 just commencing now! Click here to check out the Fantasy Festival Competition now.
LIVE: Lady Gaga and Kid Cudi perform “Make Her Say”
I’ve got a number of thoughts on this one:
1. As herfection perfectly stated, “that’s cute.” Lady Gaga hypes up Cudi’s entrance to stage and gets the crowd roaring. Oh and, why hello, Lady Gaga’s ass!
2. I wish I could just play with my voice like she does. Seems so fun!
3. I started looking for tickets to go to this show, but then I reconsidered. Lady Gaga scares me! How many people play the piano with their whole body…slamming on the high notes with their heels? And yell “who’s on my fucking stage!” Crazy people, I tell you!
4. Said scary weirdo, however, says it straight when she says in this video clip:
You know what music is about? Music is about bringing all people together! Music has no fucking religion. It has no fucking color. It has no fucking genre. It has no politics. It has no money. It’s fucking free.
Mmmhm, that’s right, Lady (ha, that works nicely!). Reminds me of what I once stated on this right here blog about music:
Music is the one thing that unites us all. Its sound is universal, its dialect understood by all. Everybody is accepted in music and may have their own niche if they so desire. One may see music as a bright color, hear music as a dark space, feel music in a positive manner, smell music in memories, taste music in their dreams, and even touch music through creativity. sunset in the rear view is dedicated to approaching all of these senses and uniting all of us who may be so different and may never understand each other by recognizing that we may all experience similar noises and feelings in music.” -Lydia
Thanks to my buddies Trey and Jack over at The Coolest Out for posting this one. Once again Hey Champ strikes big with another one of their remixes. As I’ve pointed out before, and as the guys over at The Coolest Out mentioned, Hey Champ really adds a whole new dimension to songs to make it their own when they make remixes. Here’s just another example.
A track was released today by the kid from Kansas, XV. A sunset favorite. Great production by Seven on this. Loving the rhyming! Gentle hip hop, right here. Check it out!
Thanks to the guys over at Jam and a Half for posting this gem of a song. I’ll copy what they had to say about Labi Siffre-it’s an amazing story.
In the second of our ongoing “Jam behind the Jam” series, we bring you Labi Siffre’s epic jam, “My Song,” a tale of being confident in oneself no matter what the circumstances. Labi, an openly gay British singer, songwriter, and poet, was born in England to a Barbadian/Belgian mother and a Nigerian father. Throughout his life, he performed across the world and worked with a host of musicians ranging from Ike and Tina to the Supremes, released 10 solo albums, and was an activist for a whole host of social causes and issues including the apartheid, gay rights, and civil rights. Labi was not only covered by Jay-Z in his song Streets Iz Watching, but Eminem also used part of his song, “I Got The” to create his breakthrough single, “My Name Is.”
…
Labi’s music is timeless and despite a soft piano melody and smooth vocals, “My Song” is about the hardest thing that someone can probably ever do: stand up for who they are despite haters telling them that they’re wrong. [This song is sampled in Kanye West’s song “I Wonder.”] Labi spits incredible knowledge and strength over the easiest of grooves.
Also, incase you aren’t familiar with this rendition of this song, check out “I Wonder,” by Kanye West:
I was having a talk with my cousin the other day and telling her the one down side of having a music blog and always searching for new music is that sometimes I don’t have time to stop and smell the roses. This Thanksgiving week, I’ve decided to concentrate on one playlist I’ve compiled of songs that have been either posted on this blog or that I’ve intended to post on here that are just downright GOOD songs. This is me stopping and smelling the roses. Feel free to join me by downloading the songs individually by right clicking and saving, or download the entire mixtape at the bottom through usershare.
That's the sun setting in the rear view.
Listen to the music - it lets me be near you.

About me
My name is Lydia. I recently graduated from Duke University and I initially started this blog as a way to organize new music that I found and loved. As it began to develop, I found myself with a growing number of fans and an addiction to finding and posting. It now serves as not only an organizational tool for me, but also a fun way for me to spread the word about lesser-known music of all genres to the masses near and far.
Beyond the obvious of loving music, I love issues surrounding human rights, social justice, and civil rights. I am an avid NBA fan. I love traveling and reading. And I can proudly admit that I love when people spread the word about my blog.
