Most Anticipated Albums of 2016

posted by: Alicia Lists & Rankings

2015 came and went, some albums gave us chills, others made us want to party like it’s 1999, and then there were ones that just never seemed to arrive at all. While Adele made her surprising reappearance into the music world, Frank Ocean was probably off on an island far, far away laughing at us all as we impatiently wait for his sophomore album. He was most likely chillin’ alongside Rihanna and Kanye West, who have also been taking their precious time to release their next albums. Before we get too bitter about this, it’s important to think about all the great works of art that are likely to flood our ears in 2016. Here’s a list of albums that will (hopefully) arrive in the new year and fill our musical needs.

Chairlift – Moth

Release Date: January 22

Chairlift is known for being quirky and bringing something completely fresh with their unique pop sound. After reeling many new fans in with their dreamy sophomore release Something, they’ve come back with their undeniably cool single, “Cha-Ching”. Moth is bound to be a refreshing January release and will give fans of the indie-pop duo a dose of something new.

Bloc Party – Hymns

Release Date: January 29

rsz_1bloc-party-hymns-album

Bloc Party may be a band that’s been around for over 10 years, but it’s as if their sound is lit with something new every time they release a record. Some may have not even realized that Bloc Party is still around, but they are indeed still cooking up music and bringing more passion each time. They aren’t the young boys that wrote the famous indie-rock anthems “Banquet” or “Helicopter” anymore, now they’re all grown up and ready to bring a different perspective to their music. “The Love Within” is one of the tracks off the upcoming album and it gives a very upbeat, happy feel. The video is just as colorful as the track and gives a taste of one of the many sides of Bloc Party. This is another release that’ll come quite early in the year and hopefully please some old and news fans.

Santigold – 99¢

Release Date: January 22

rsz_santigold-99-cents-560x560

Santigold has been bringing her hip-hop inspired pop edginess since she first stepped foot in the music world with her self-titled debut album. Since then she’s released one other album, Masters of Make-Believe, and has toured the world with her energetic dance infused live show. It’s been 3 years since her last album and she recently released her latest track “Who Be Lovin’ Me” featuring ILOVEMAKONNEN. It’s got a chill and out of the ordinary style, compared to a lot of what we’re used to with Santigold, so it should be interesting to see what the whole package sounds like when her third full-length album 99¢ hits shelves.

Tinashe – Joyride

Release Date: January 2016

rsz_tinashe_presspct20imagepct201

Once upon a time, Tinashe was releasing mixtapes and simply trying to gain a following. Now she’s known for her radio hits (“2 On” and “All Hands On Deck”), her killer dance moves and her many collaborations with other well-known artists (Calvin Harris, Chris Brown, and Nick Jonas, to name a few). She’s become the r&b princess of today and she doesn’t seem to be looking back. “Party Favors” is just one of the offerings off her upcoming album and it has that Tinashe flavor we’ve all come to love. It’s a party song, but has a mysterious sound that makes it stand out from the rest. Joyride seems like it will take us on a journey that’s worth waiting for.

Lissie – My Wild West

Release Date: February 12

rsz_lissie-my-wild-west

Lissie is an artist that has always stuck to her roots by leaving her heart on her sleeve and creating music that feels authentic. There are no bells and whistles that need to be added to Lissie’s music, instead, a good dose of guitar and emotion are enough to do the trick. She has a lot to live up to after releasing some very solid albums, but Lissie’s rawness is sure to not disappear anytime soon. “Hero”, one of the tracks off of My Wild West, makes that quite clear already. It’s a folk-indie-rock display that’s powerful and beautiful, all at once. Lissie’s latest release will hopefully be filled with the same undeniable elements.

Poliça – United Crushers

Release Date: March 4

PolicaUC_Cover_01

Polica is one of a kind with their mystical, quirky pop sound. The Minnesota-based act is unlike any other artist because they simply bring something that is unlike the norm. It’s not just basic pop music, nor is it regular electronic music. It’s a blend of both with a dash of something completely weird (weird in the best way!). Now they’re gearing up to release their third album which is sure to bring another unique layer to their discography. “Lime Habit” is the first taste of what’s to come.

Pusha T – King Push

Release Date: Spring 2016

rsz_a-release-date-for-pusha-ts-king-push-has-been-unintentionally-revealed

Pusha T gave his fans a treat when he released the first part of what he’s been cooking up, Darkest Before Dawn: The Prelude. That release alone got hip-hop fans’ mouths watering because of the rawness and pure fire of its sound. Now it’s time to wait for part two, which is bound to be even more intense and possibly even better than its appetizer. Luckily, the wait won’t drive anyone too crazy now that there’s the prelude to keep us all busy.

Drake – Views From the 6

Release Date: January 2016?/TBA

rsz_6_0

Are words even needed for the hip-hop prince that just keeps giving us everything we need? Probably not, but it’s worth discussing what he’s about to drop in the near future (hopefully January if rumors are true). Although Drake has sprinkled music here and there throughout 2015 with mixtapes, collaborations, and features, it’s safe to say we are overdue for a solid full-length album. “Hotline Bling” made us feel some type of way and his Future collaboration was good for our souls, but it’s time to bring everything you’ve got Drake. Give us that album! Until we wait, we’ll just overdose on your dance moves for the rest of the year.

James Blake – Radio Silence

Release Date: TBA

rsz_james-blake-promo

There’s always a handful of artists, every year, that tell the world that an album is coming. Meanwhile, we all sit and wait, and the months just go by. James Blake made fans excited when he first mentioned he was working hard on an album this time last year and we even got teased a few times throughout the year thinking it may appear, but it just never did. Since he was given a pass in 2015, it’s just a guess that 2016 may be the year the sultry artist returns again.

AlunaGeorge – TBA

Release Date: TBA

rsz_151030_alunageorge_5001

AlunaGeorge has been stealing hearts with Aluna’s silky, sweet vocals and George’s addictive, electronic beats. They gained a crazy amount of recognition for their DJ Snake remixed version of “I Know You Like It” this year and it has only helped them gain an even larger audience than before. However, they’re far more than just a hit on the radio, they’re a talented duo that’s ready to take their music to the next level. Their debut album Body Music was a catchy first display of AlunaGeorge, but there’s bound to be more to come from these English darlings.

Sky Ferreira – Masochism

Release Date: TBA

rsz_01-beauty-instagrams-skyferreira

Sky Ferreira has been hard at work since releasing her debut album Night Time, My Time. The pop songstress has always had an edge to her and has managed to get listeners hooked with her “don’t care” attitude. She’ll gladly get things done her way and won’t look back. Which most likely means, it’ll be no different when she comes back into the scene with her next piece of work. Although it’s taking some time to get too much info on the next record, patience will probably bring some of Sky Ferreira’s best material yet.

Rihanna – ANTI

Release Date : TBA

rsz_lossy-page1-316px-antipct2c_album_covertiff

ANTI is one of those albums that always feels so close, yet never actually gets released. Rihanna has been teasing us with snippets of what’s to come, but when we’ll actually get the full product is a mystery. Instead, we are left with super awkward Twitter posts from Rihanna’s cowriter and other absurd speculation. Rihanna clearly has a lot up her sleeve, that we have yet to see, so we’ll just have to sit back and hope ANTI makes a surprise release as soon as possible.

Kanye West – Swish

Release Date: TBA

rsz_kanye-west-swish-album-title-640x703

Kanye West is one busy man these days. Although it feels like we’ve only been teased with a song from him here and there, he’s been off making other life changes. First of all, he’s a fashion designer that’s making his mark on the clothing world and second, he’s been making more precious babies with his wifey Kim Kardashian. Luckily, things are beginning to slow down and it seems Mr. West is focusing on his upcoming album Swish. We still don’t know when it will arrive, but when it does it’ll probably knock us all off our feet (exactly how the hip-hop perfectionist would want it).

Frank Ocean – Boys Don’t Cry

Release Date: ?!?!?!

rsz_tumblr_m84ubvr4dt1qa42jro1_1280-855x570
It’s incredibly tempting to just insert a crying face emoji in this place, but it’s time to be strong. Frank Ocean has given us something beautiful to hold onto with his debut album Channel Orange, so he’s making sure we hold it tight as long as possible before we go ditching it for his new album. Understandable. We don’t know when Boys Don’t Cry will be released or if we may even need to wait until 2017, but we’ll be sitting here with impatience in our eyes.
