Tom Weir is Ghost Waves

GhostWaves, real name Tom Weir, is the fresh take on what he calls Americana. He is Big Beat, he is Pop, and, in my opinion, kin to nothing you have ever heard before. His tracks are both beachy and, with obscure lyrics echoing throughout, ambient.

This is Sunset In The Rearview’s formal introduction of GhostWaves via his debut EP “Stay Wavy.”  There will probably be no precedent in your music library for this type of music for Tom Weir is GhostWaves and, all genre labels aside, to be compared to nothing else.

“Stay Wavy” is four unique tracks that blend together to form a distinctive and singular taste of what GhostWaves’ future has in store for us. You can download the entire EP here or you can check below for solo download/stream of each track. Be sure to check out “Intro/Night”, by far my favorite, and to let me know if you want to learn more about GhostWaves

Introducing: German Error Message

Anybody else feel like low quality is taking over today’s indie music scene? I don’t mean poor quality, I mean low quality. Whether it’s lo-fi music or these hipster-infused photos, it’s everywhere. But it’s cool, I’m eating it up just as much as the next person.

Anyway, I’ve got some new music by a dude who goes by the name of German Error Message. His music is experimental folk that’s really soothing. Light picking on guitar and beautiful chord progressions on the piano make up the majority of his gentle composition.

If you like what you hear, you can download the entire album for free over on his webpage

Arcade Fire Interactive Music Video…Might Be The Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread

This interactive video set to Arcade Fire’s “We Used To Wait” has basically just destroyed the term “raising the bar.” Because, quite frankly, they have taken the bar and thrown it out the window, into a swamp full of bar-eating bacteria. That way, nobody can ever reach that bar again.

In all honesty, though, this is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a long time. Basically what this director Chris Milk has done, alongside some of his friends from Google Chrome and the members of Arcade Fire, is create a story with the song that is centered around the home you grew up in. And without ruining the experience for you, I’ll just put it this way - don’t just expect to see an aerial view of your city or neighborhood. It gets personal. It’s amazing.

The team recommends that you close other browsers and windows for this experience. I demand that you close everything and don’t be alarmed by different windows popping up. Also, don’t make the mistake I made and start moving windows around so you can see all of them. It does all the work for itself.

Enjoy this. It’s a masterpiece. If some crazy scientist is ever able to recreate and raise the bar that has now been dissolved into nothing, then that just says it all right there - ANYTHING is possible.

Weird Music Videos Becoming…Normal?

Things are getting weird in the Land of Music Videos. It seems it’s becoming trendy (and no, that is not statistically correct to say, because it’s only 2 that I know of) to center music videos around the death of imaginary animals that serve as pets. First Yeasayer shocked the world with their music video for “Madder Red,” which features Kristen Bell mourning over the loss of her strange, and rather revolting-looking pet. As grossed out as I first was, I found myself moved by the direction and the storyline.

Next thing I knew, I finally got around to watching the music video for “Congratulations” by MGMT, and they had the same premise! Too weird. But once again, moving…heartwarming, if you will.

Check it out for yourself and see what you think. Is this weird to you? Do you like one better than the other?

By the way, in getting all of the links for this post, I realized I’m not the first one to associate these two videos with each other. So I apologize for the apparent lack of originality, but how can you not think of one when you see the other?

BONUS: Thanks to a comment from Kathy, I’m now aware of the fact that you can buy the MGMT record on Amazon for only FIVE dollars. Do it. You wont.

Mashup Monday!

And just like that, summer’s over? I’m in denial over here. And I’m not even in school anymore! But that means my Summer Fridays are gone, the peaceful view of Durham is gone, and the colder weather is right around the corner. Okay, so maybe I’m not that sad about the cooler weather. Anyway, another Monday, another Mashup. Enjoy!
