K’Naan – Is Anybody Out There (ft. Nelly Furtado)

It’s very rare that I post something on Sunset that I dislike, but every once in a while I have to vent a little. Today, I’m saddened to say that I’m not a fan of the newest song from K’Naan.
Okay, hear me out. The message is great. Wonderful, in fact. I’m not being sarcastic in the slightest – as a human rights major in college, I really believe in messages like these. (The basic message is that some people in this world feel completely alone, coming to a point where they feel the need to scream ‘Is Anybody Out There?) So while I’m all about the message that the song is sending, it’s, quite frankly, an incredibly cheesy, overproduced, irritating song with a chorus sung by Nelly Furtado that sounds a bit like nails on a chalkboard. Even K’Naan sounds like he’s forcing rhymes that just don’t flow that well. “Never looked like Cameron / Diaz was her last name” … really? Was that just to use the word Cameron? What does Cameron Diaz have to do with this? I understand that she’s a pretty actress, but that’s just so random.
Ugh. I’m sad about this. I’m a HUGE K’Naan fan, but this is a big let down. Seems like they’re going for a radio song, no? This is definitely annoying enough to be put on the radio. Anyway, that’s all. Do you have any opinions on the song? Leave a comment with your thoughts.
