Pop music is often associated with being a big, dumb, evil, manipulative, corporate machine that brainwashes the youth with basic choruses that debase women and induce unnecessary insecurities in our young girls and boys. It also takes advantage of the naivety of young listeners by applying tangible things to represent large concepts, such as love, which is also incredibly lazy songwriting. The genius of “What Should I Do” by Jaymes Young is that it does not claim to have all the answers. I mean, literally, Young is asking a question in the chorus. But aside from that, the song sounds like a conversation instead of the annoying, bossy nature of some pop music. It simply lets the music breath and the lyrics shine.
