I introduced you guys to Chance The Rapper back when he released “Family,” his way of paying homage to the people he loves the most. Yesterday, Chance released his debut mixtape #10Day. After hearing “Family” and previewing some tracks on #5Day, I had some high expectations for this tape. They were unsurprisingly met by Chance’s unique flow, excellent selection of producers, and sense of how to make a catchy hook. And I’ll be honest, I didn’t really “get” the original “Long Time,” where Chance just straight goes off over Beirut’s “Nantes“–I felt like that just about ruined a great song. Luckily, the adapted beat on “Long Time II” makes up for the original entirely. And the beat on “Juke Juke,” which samples The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Big Poppa,” gets insane at the chorus. Consider that a warning.
