Ab-Soul – Control System (Album Stream)

Ab-Soul’s Control System album represents the latest piece of work from the Top Dawg Entertainment crew. Continuing his brief stints of magnificence, Ab-Soul enlists the help from fellow members including: Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock (Black Hippy) and the result is rather impressive. Few standout tracks after a few listens are “Lust Demons” and “ILLuminate”. The Los Angeles group keeps on rollin’ after turning heads throughout the hip/hop scene within the past year. Looking forward to what the future holds for this extremely talented group. Until then, check out Control System below and be sure to purchase it on iTunes.
[Video] Chance The Rapper – Hey Ma

In celebration of Mother’s Day, Chicago based emcee Chance The Rapper dropped some heartfelt visuals for his track, Hey Ma, off his #10Day mixtape. Directed by Elijah Alvarado, the video parallels some candid photos from Mr. Bennett’s childhood with his current self–all in the name of his loving mama who helped him become who he is today.
Happy Mother’s Day my mama, your mama and every mama out there.
Friday at Five [Weekend Music]

Unless your from Greenland (sorry Greenland audience), the rapidly approaching summer means a couple thangs: tank tops, sunglasses, bikinis, cold dranks and of course, live music. One of my favorite things to do on a hot ass summer day is to hit up an outdoor concert. Coachella has already come and go, but we still got plenty of big boys to come, including Bonnaroo, Pitchfork, Summerfest, Lollapalooza, Electric Forest, etc.
Will ya’ll be attending any shows this summer? What are you most looking forward to?
Oh yeah, happy #Friday.

Crystal Fighters – Earth Island

Guys. I’ve been sleeping on Crystal Fighters for too long now. I’ve seen email inboxes from one of my trusted press contacts and haven’t had time to get to them (that was my first mistake), but finally today got time to listen, and I’m obsessed. Because I couldn’t say this as well myself, I’m going to have to quote the press email to describe their sound: “melding techno, punk, electronic and dubstep with Basque country folklore and native Spanish instruments (txalaparta, danbolin, and txistu).”
Crystal Fighters released their Star of Love LP ON April 24th in the US, and this song, “Earth Island,” was the main single. I’m absolutely loving it. Such a great collection of unique sounds. These guys are diverse. I can see them matching up with the likes of Reptar, but also somebody like M.I.A. And I can’t say I had put Reptar and M.I.A. in the same sentence before. I’m typically not a big fan of dubstep, mainly because it’s not easy listening. But these guys add a catchy melody to the beats and, suddenly, I’m drooling.
Hit the jump for upcoming Crystal Fighters tour dates.
Too Many Rappers ft. Nas – Beastie Boys (Urban Noize Remix)

Urban Noize, the remix/production duo out of Florida, continue their recent rise to relevance (alliteration!) with this fantastic remix of the recent Beastie Boys and Nas collaboration, found on the Beasties’ Hot Sauce Committee, Part 1. The duo infuse an awesome funk-feel into the hip-hop track, which brings it a greatly welcome new feel. Most likely spurred on by the death of Adam Yauch, this is one of the best ways I can think of to honor the late Beastie Boy. RIP MCA.

Azealia Banks – Jumanji

Yung Rapunxel aka Azealia Banks aka the reincarnation of Missy Eliot just unleashed this new jam off her SoundCloud. It’s a busy song with an even busier flow by Ms. Banks that’s sure to get people on their feet. Looks like this one is a cut off her upcoming mixtape, Fantastic. Ooh wee.

Mike Posner – Tapada World

It’s been a while since we’ve heard just about anything from Mr. Posner (he dropped a pretty good mixtape, The Layover, back in the fall) but he seems like he’s back en force with this Diplo and Benny Blanco-produced smash. This version is the remix used in his recent Reebok commercial, but rumor has it that the full single will drop sometime this month, featuring a verse from GOOD’s Big Sean, who seems to be taking over right now. S/O to my boy A over at FreshNewTracks for the find.
Low Moon Low – Slow Train

If Low Moon Low was a human, they’d be an infant. Not for lack of maturity, but because they are “brand spankin’ new” (yeah, I stole those words from them). They launched their Facebook page yesterday. It has 60 fans. If “Slow Train” is any indication of what they’ve got coming for us, I’m pretty confident that these London lads will be skipping grades soon. Reach for the Moon, fellows. You don’t have far to go. (Woah. Get it?)
Ghost Beach – Miracle

In March, I professed my love for Ghost Beach’s song “Faded” and came up with a new genre called indietronic. I’m sticking with my indietronic (indie + electronic for those that don’t know) on how to describe these guys. THIS IS SO GOOD.
Yup, this is going on my “long car ride” cd.
P.S. – At around 2:14, it reminds me of this awesome movie.
NERDDSSS!!!!!!
Oberhofer – Runaway (Kanye West Cover)

I’ve recently come to terms with the facts that Oberhofer‘s one of my favorite bands. You can read about that HERE in my review of their first commercial release Time Capsules II. Just yesterday the band released a studio version of a song they’ve been covering at live shows for quite awhile now. It’s actually really impressive how true they stay to the modern classic original.

Left Boy – Call Me Maybe

I’m usually not a fan of remixing “guilty pleasure” songs, but if I had to trust anybody to get the job done right, it’d probably be Left Boy. Sampling the annoyingly infectious single, Call Me Maybe, Left Boy puts Carly Rae Jepsen through some sort of video game soundtrack blender and adds his own weird brand of bars to boot. Word.
G-Eazy – Marilyn [Video]

Our boy G-Eazy dropped the video for his 2012 single, “Marilyn” today. This is one of my favorite songs of the year so far. To say I was incredibly excited, on the verge of doing jumping jacks and somersaults at work, would be an understatement. Yep, understatement. Get on the G-Eazy train, if you’re not already. (And if that’s the case, where the hell have you been?) This dude is not fucking around.
These visuals are all too real, if you ask me. I love that they’ve made it into a short film, which is, I believe, what I always liked most about the song. It’s a story, and far too many of us understand it.
