Tape Tuesday: Hot Ass Summer Day

The weather is a lot warmer now. I like that. Just the other day I almost went to the beach, which really is a promising sign. But gosh darn it, I digress. This mix isn’t about summer the season. It’s about the people you spend time with during the summertime. It’s about friends. It’s about family. It’s even about those random strangers that you meet at the beach (not the rapey kind!). This is the mix that can soundtrack your entire summer vacation and hopefully stay relevant throughout.
Let me also say that HOT ASS SUMMER DAY is dedicated to Lydia, whose birthday is today. I love Lydia. I don’t know how many times I have to say it (I think that’s the first time). She’s taught me so much in such a short amount of time and has given me such an awesome opportunity to write for Sunset in the Rearview and do things that I never thought would be possible a year ago. I literally love every second of it, so swag on that.
Please take this time now to wish Lydia happy birthday softly in your mind or on Twitter.
While I was feeling such a mess, I thought you’d leave me behind,
While I was feeling so upset, I thought the sun never shine,
Then I found forever. Hey! Hey! Love!
We’ve been best friends forever darling,
That’s what’s up!

Tape Tuesday: This is Country

My life has recently changed. I have taken a liking to country, and it truly has changed my life. I’m not exactly sure how it happened–maybe from kids playing it at school, maybe from my sister playing it at home, but one day I just couldn’t stop listening to it and it’s been in heavy rotation ever since.
A lot of people hate country–trust me, I understand that. I couldn’t listen to it until about a week and a half ago, and I couldn’t understand what anyone saw in it. Now I’ve completely flip flopped. When people tell me they can’t listen to country now, it makes no sense to me.
Anyway, these are my favorite country songs right now, the songs that got me into country in the first place.
By all means, PLEASE help me grow my country collection. Let me know in the comments what else I should be listening to!
Josh Kelley – Georgia Clay
Benjy Davis Project – Mississippi
Jason Aldean – Dirt Road Anthem
Punch Brothers – This Girl
Jason Aldean – Church Pew or Barstool
Joe Nichols – Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off
Kenny Chesney – You and Tequila (feat. Grace Potter)

Zac Brown Band – Different Kind of Fine
Old Crow Medicine Show – Wagon Wheel

Tape Tuesday: The Night Out

I wanted to make a mix that could document a long, dangerous, overly emotional, fun, sad night, so I made The Night Out. This is the mix that could soundtrack those nights you spend with your obnoxious group of friends (that you love even though they are obnoxious) as you jump from place to place around the bomb ass city creating havoc wherever you go. This is the mix for those nights that start off crazy and fun and awesome and then end with short sentences and awkward goodbyes. Listen below.
Use the sleeves on my sweater, let’s have an adventure, head in the clouds but my gravity’s centered, touch my neck and I’ll touch yours, you in those little hot waisted shorts

Tape Tuesday: We are the universe.

This Tape Tuesday features an eclectic assortment of music. It starts out with probably the best opening track from any album this year. Then, it moves into the endlessly catchy title track (kind of) by tree, only to be taken up a notch with the strangely unknown Skizzy Mars track, “Meant for Me,” which I think is one of his best songs yet. After another relatively unknown track, the mix takes a more folksy tone with a Matt Longo track (thanks to an email from him, which I almost didn’t open). Leading up to the interlude (edited by yours truly), the songs become more indie rock. Each song in this middle section of the mix is uniquely catchy. At least, I think so. ‘We are the universe.’ then ends with two haunting tracks from powerful female vocalists followed by an intense love (but also kind of hate) song that will make you want to square dance or some shit.
Also, I would like to shout out Lydia and Jordan for hitting me up with some of my favorite tracks of the month. I would also like to thank Charlotte Wilder for illustrating the awesome cover art.
No sun revolves around you only, how could you think that you’re lonely? Our universe is vast but gravity will hold you back and overcoming obstacles is easy when you got control.
- Frankie Rose – Interstellar
- tree – Universal (ft. Ariel Thiermann)
- Skizzy Mars – Meant for Me

Tape Tuesday: King and Lionheart

One thing that’s cool about music these days is that it can come from so many different places. This mix is a compilation of songs from the places I’ve been since my last mix. I watched the emotional Chuck series finale, which ended with “Rivers and Roads” by The Head and the Heart. I dealt with an actual conversation about death on New Year’s Eve and found the Scattered Trees song as a result of it. I finally looked up Perfume Genius and stumbled upon their short but sweet new song called “Hood.” I discovered Kishi Bashi thanks to his ties with of Montreal (whose new album you can stream here). Lydia showed me Terence Ryan and Ugly, Ugly Words. Literally, every song on this mix comes from a unique person, place, or event that affected me in the past month. The result is King and Lionheart.
Well, you know, I’ll have to see, if all the stars aligned we could have solved the mystery,
It’s a partial fantasy, we’re living in a land that went astray from history.
Tracklist:
- Terence Ryan – Skeleton (Yeah Yeah Yeahs Remix)
- Kishi Bashi – It All Began with a Burst
- Midi Matilda – Day Dreams
- Antonio Paul – Made in China [Acoustic Mix]
- Scattered Trees – A Conversation (About Death on New Year’s Eve)
- Guillemots – I Don’t Feel Amazing Now
- Perfume Genius – Hood

Tape Tuesday: Songs for an Actress 3

If we can just recap for a second, the whole Songs for an Actress trilogy is named after a Hoodie Allen track of pretty much the same name. The first of the trilogy was the very first mixtape I ever made on Sunset in the Rearview. It contains some of my favorite songs of last year and is still one of my favorite mixes. The second was the first mini-mix I ever made for my Saturday at Sunset daily special. It contains more hip-hop/rap than any of my other mixes, including the always hilarious “Rashida Jones” by Prometheus Brown and Bambu and the incredibly catchy “A Lil More” by Otayo Dubb.
This, the third and final installment in the series, is an audacious attempt at a real mix. Like, you know, the one’s that actual DJ’s play. Wait, okay. That’s not completely true. What I like about this mix is actually how eclectic it is. One second you can be snorting crack cocaine to a remix of an Avicii track and the next you can be crying yourself to sleep! The whole mix is an audio representation of your estranged uncle. But unlike your estranged uncle, it’s just crazy enough to work.
And yeah, I wrote these songs for an actress.
Tracklist:
- “Levels (Vitzi’s Old School Intro)” – Avicii
- “Hold On (ft. Sampha)” – SBTRKT
- “Five Minutes” – Scattered Trees
- “Lunar Lovers” – Finally Boys
- “Something Goes Right” – SBTRKT
- “Bury the Floors” – Scattered Trees
- “All I Know” – Joe Goddard
- “Cinema (ft. Gary Go)” – Benny Benassi

Tape Tuesday: The End of the World

I think it was last year. I don’t even know because clearly I’ve repressed the memory. I humiliated myself. I don’t want to talk about what I did, but it was just a disaster. I felt like it was the end of the world. Instead of dealing with the problem at hand, I ignored it and buried it in the depths of my memory, while I worked on other things, trying to keep my mind off of the situation. It’s kind of what I do. I started a music blog, and one of the mixes I made on it was called nostalgia, ULTRA, named after Frank Ocean’s awesome mixtape. Anyway, I looked back on my iTunes and dug up some of the songs from that and stuck them on this mix. THE END OF THE WORLD is a rehashing of an embarrassing moment in my life. It contains both old and new songs and is super personal and dear to me. Be sure to download it and play it one year from tomorrow. Honestly, that was just a coincidence.

Tape Tuesday: Reunion

I made this mix long before the FIELD TRIP and THE RACE. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been adding and removing songs from the mix, trying desperately to perfect it. I’ll be honest; the idea behind REUNION was to make a mix that somehow captured some of the magic of M83′s Hurry Up We’re Dreaming. I mean, currently, that’s my front-runner for album of the year, so it makes sense.
REUNION is my way of paying homage to M83′s great album; hopefully, it does it justice.
The tape can be divided into three stages of life: childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Tracks #1-6 cover childhood, starting with a single from The Sound of Arrow‘s excellent album Voyage and culminating at Australian rapper 360‘s nostalgia-inducing gem, “Child.”
Tracks #7-14 get moody and emotional. They are really inconsistent in their tones, starting very excitedly at “Reunion” and “Fantasy” and then transitioning into the very dark and personal “Palace” and “Buried Alive (Interlude).” Adolescence ends with “Summer Camp” by Summer Camp, a song from the band’s commerical debut Welcome to Condale–another great album. If Summer Camp can’t make you feel like a teenager again, I don’t know what can. I’m a teenager right now, and they make me feel like even more of a teenager! SMH. Swag.
“Missed Calls” and “Letter Home” mark the transition into adulthood, dealing with those late nights in the city, drink in hand, thinking of ex-girlfriends. That happens, right? The mixtape ends with an 8-minute song that will melt your pants off if you’re patient enough. I swear, the chorus on “Hold On” is the most infectious thing since the swine flu. Hey, let’s break the download record on this one. GO GO GO!
Tracklist/Preview:
- The Sound of Arrows – Wonders
- Blondfire – Where the Kids Are
- St. Lucia – We Got It Wrong
- 360 – Child
- Mac Miller – Hole in the Pocket
- Simian Ghost – Take My Hand and Lead Me Home
- M83 – Reunion
- DyE – Fantasy
- ASAP Rocky – Palace (Prod. by Clams Casino)

- Cassius – I Love U So (TROWA Remix)
- RDGLDGRN – I Love Lamp
- That Work – Secret Lover
- Summer Camp – Summer Camp
- Mac Miller – Missed Calls
- Childish Gambino – Letter Home
- 360 – Run Alone
- The Chain Gang of 1974 – Hold On
Tape Tuesday: Field Trip

I really like taking completely different songs and putting them together into one cohesive mix. I think I did that with this mix. It starts out with a cool electronic indie song followed immediately by an experimental rap song, but how different are they really? Both feature hollowed out production that sounds like they were recorded in either a shower or a cave. Next, you get a song from Summer Camp’s excellent debut Welcome to Condale. That’s followed by an instrumental from DJ Sabzi, the production half of Blue Scholars. Both songs share similar melodies (the whistle on “Last American Virgin” and the synth line on “Trailer Park Bazaar”). I think throughout the mix you’re given these interesting pairings that ultimately form a killer series of songs. That was the idea, anyway.
We used to hold hands like field trips. Preview the mix below.
Tracklist/Preview:
- Dems – Down On You
- Cities Aviv – W E T D R E A M
- Summer Camp – Last American Virgin
- Sabzi – Trailer Park Bazaar

- Ghost Beach – Empty Streets
- Strange Talk – Sexual Lifestyle

Tape Tuesday: Hii Times At Sunset High

The answer is yes: that is me in the cover art. We were those ignorant kids taking pictures with the flash at the Hookah bar.
Well, I’m pretty sure the theme for this is obvious. That “chill” music for your listening pleasures.
I had to limit myself with Cudder and Wiz, but still, this is quite an enjoyable playlist. 53.2 minutes for those sessions I know some of you have, or just to mellow out after a long day of work. Now granted, everyone has their own set of songs they like, but this just highlights my top ones.
My three favorite tracks are Man On The Moon, I Want You, and Up. Enjoy!

Tape Tuesday: The Realest

When Sunset in the Rearview’s own D Prep began his college career this September, he was unlucky enough to meet me, Honest Bill, his roommate. Although most of our interactions are based around violence and hatred, we occasionally make peace to talk about our favorite topic, and the favorite topic of many readers of this site: music. This past week, the topic was Jay Electronica. Thus we have joined together to deliver Sunset’s “Tape Tuesday”: The Realest. In an era dominated by swag and wonton soup, there is nothing better than slowing it down, sitting back, and listening to some more serious MC’s laying down their genius.
The first and most important track in this tape is Jay Electronica’s “Eternal Sunshine.” In this nine minute magnus opum of hip-hop, JayElec not only delivers multiple verses that I believe stand alone as some of the greatest of all time, but also pushes the boundaries of hip-hop with obscure samples and an array of beats that aren’t really beats at all; “I took Eternal Sunshine and I looped it, no drums no hook just new shit.” You have to listen to this track to understand it. Take ten minutes and give Jay some patience, he will give back one of the true gems of hip-hop.
It’s crazy to think about the lack of attention that Jay Elec receives. He’s on such a heightened level compared to others in the game right now, yet you never hear him on the radio; while Wayne wins Grammys, Jay Elec just lays down the realness; “I get tempted by all the rewards that come along with making n****r songs…and when you talk like this and try to walk like this the radio stations will never put a n****r on. Just Mims, just 50, just Wayne, just Jeezy and Franchize Boys and Jimmy Jones. Fuck that, fuck rap, this is God Hop. Kingdom music for the hard knocks.”
As further proof of Jay Elec’s genius, I have also thrown in “Exhibit A (Transformations)” which features an exquisite verse from Mos Def, and “My World (Nas Salute).”
Also included is Immortal Techniques’ “Dance with the Devil,” one of the most heavy-handed song in all of hip-hop. As one of Immortal’s best works, it simply wouldn’t be right not to include it. “Dance with the Devil” touches on issues ranging from drugs, to murder, to rape, in the brutally honest way Technique has become known for.
“Glen Close,” of Binary Star’s epic album Masters of The Universe, is quite simply one of my favorite politically inspired hip-hop tracks of all. It gets a little difficult towards the middle, but the opening verse is perfection.
“Dancing in the Rain” is an interesting take on the real struggles many rappers face. Blu discusses how difficult it is to make a career out of hip hop while making a living honestly; “I guess my bills ain’t paid/ No ride to work for the day/ Second option hop the bus but there’s a traffic delay/ My boss trippin’ cause I’m runnin’ late and ain’t no excuse/ When I’m about to be 22 without a whip I could swoop/ Feel like I’m fixin to shoot my own dome with chrome to escape/ Zonin’ out cause workin workin out ain’t worth what I make/ My lady callin’ buggin’ always fussin’ just cause we ain’t ballin’/ But it’s hard because her cousin is fuckin’ rich cause her husband’s hustlin’/ And I ain’t fuckin touchin’ nothin’ but a mic/ Five o’clock and off of work ready to go home and write.” Blu doesn’t try to pretend that he’s rich, or that he’s slangin’ caine, or that he’s got girls all over him; he raps about his daily struggles, and in an era where hip hop seems to be getting less and less real, Blu’s music is refreshing.
These last few tracks are RjD2 collaborations from his 2002 debut album, Deadringer. In my opinion these are some of the most musically interesting tracks in hip-hop, products of a game-changing musician like Rj complimented by top-shelf rappers like Blueprint, Jakki, and Copywrite.
This tape is a collection of real hip hop. Not “swag,” not “dope,” not “ill.” Just real.
- Eternal Sunshine – Jay Electronica
- Exhibit A (Transformations) – Jay Electronica
- My World (Nas Salute) – Jay Electronica
- Dance With The Devil – Immortal Technique
- Glen Close – Binary Star
- Final Frontier ft. Blueprint – RjD2
- F.H.H. ft. Jakki – RjD2
- Dancing in the Rain – Blu and Exile

Tape Tuesday: stay gold/cover girl

This mixtape has a reprise. So neat y’all.
Ugh, come on, Arjun! Cut the crap! Let’s not play games. Tell it to us straight.
FINE, loyal fans and Twitter followers and real life followers (crazy people), this is a really good mix. It’s short, but it does its job; it tells a story. It has some rock and some weird fusion R&B à la the ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ mix. It contains zero hip-hop. No rap. Sorry. I’ll make it up to you. Soon-ish.
The mix shows bits and pieces of me. “Cover Girl” is my favorite song right now. “It’s Going” is one of my favorite sad songs of all time. “Time” is my epic song of the moment, and arguably, one of the most epic songs ever created. ”Stay Gold” is simply my jam; same with its remix. “Breaking Down” is not my favorite song from Florence + the Machine’s Ceremonials, but it works here in all its Arcade Fire-esque glory. Finally, “Berlin” is just a bundle of fun (like Ferbie!). Look for more fun stuff on the next mix.
In the meantime, download ‘stay gold/cover girl’, and stay gold, cover girl.
