CCK (Candy Coated Killahz) – Light Up This City
You know, I typically don’t fall for this shit — this music that’s incredibly reliant on a sound engineer’s expertise to make it sound alright. But days come and days go and with it, my needs and tastes follow the current. I will stand against certain things. Always. But this track by CCK doesn’t push it far enough for it to fall into my dead zone. It’s on the line between too much and enjoyable, but today it seems the shot tracker has deemed it in bounds. I think it’s because of the awesome stand-up drumming section at the end of the song. And hell, it’s catchy. That said, though…Candy Coated Killahz? Really?

Candy Coated Killahz is a self-produced three piece (German-Jamaican producer & frontgirl Tasha, Nigerian vocalist Icon the Anomali, and DJ/producer Danthrax). They’ve already shared the stage with acts like The Gza, The Roots, The Cool Kids, and were recently remixed by DJ Green Lantern, Che Vicious, and Bonjay. On this album the band explores the club-and-dj elements of their sound and will be releasing a mixtape later this year, which dives back into the darker, grittier corners of their sound.
