Kid Cudi – Wylin Cause I’m Young (ft. Kanye West)

With my tweet yesterday that some may have found outlandish and others may have agreed with, I felt it necessary to back up my opinion on the newly released Kid Cudi and Kanye West song, “Wylin Cause I’m Young.”
My tweet:
“Wylin Cause I’m Young” – Kid Cudi ft. Kanye West
Falade just did a post this morning about Kid Cudi’s new track, “Mr. Rager” and it inspired me to post a bit more of my thoughts on this Kid Cudi controversy. The two of us may be on different sides of the fence on this, though I am certainly not settled in any deep opinions one way or the other. I merely have thoughts, and am waiting to be proved wrong.
It seems that there’s a head-to-head on Kid Cudi’s latest releases – some think that Kid Cudi has been sucked dry of any talent, while others think that Cudi is still releasing top-notch pieces, you just have to understand his story and hear them all packaged together to really experience the wonder of it all.
I’m going to preface by saying that I am one of Kid Cudi’s biggest fans. Have been since the first day I heard his music a couple of years ago, and am really trying my best not to lose any faith in his abilities, because if he disappears, so too will a bit of myself, it seems. However, with some of the recent songs he has put out, I feel as though his pen is running dry.
It started with the release of “Erase Me,” which to me sounded like a song made solely for the ears of radio-listeners rather than the Cudi-faithful who relish in the dark, melancholic and lonesome songs that we know to be his style.
Now, with “Wylin’ Cause I’m Young,” I’m finding myself…well, bored. His rhyme schemes just aren’t that fun to listen to, the beat is monotonic, and there is no sense of either of two things that I fell in love with when listening to Cudi: an anthemic, sing-songy new brand of hip hop, or, as I mentioned just a minute ago, a darker, honest view of the troubled lonely stoner within. The hook is boring, and though Kanye spits a couple amusing lines, Kid Cudi just didn’t capture my attention once throughout the song. Again, this is coming from the same girl who wants to marry Scott Mescudi. Something doesn’t seem right.
My fingers are crossed that when Cudder releases his album, I will consider myself fooled. I am praying that it will all come together as a packaged deal and I will be re-enlightened by the beauty I have known. But for now, I’m left longing for some more of the sample-based, fun to sing along to, yet haunting sounds from Kid Cudi that can both put me to sleep at night and wake me up in the morning. “Revofev” did this for me, “Mr. Rager” I believe can get there, but “Erase Me” and “Wylin’ Cause I’m Young” (likely not off the upcoming album) are not cutting it.
Which way do you think he’ll go?
