“Marathon” – Tennis

I had a discussion with my boyfriend the other day about how music trends seem to come and go in waves. We were listening to Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, and he seemed to think that their music didn’t sound very trendy. I begged to differ, as I think they are very trendy. What exactly does trendy mean? Well, who knows. I guess it depends on the category of music. Right now, I’d say trendy in indie music means hipster. What makes me think that Edward Sharpe is trendy is that they sound old fashioned. Somewhat similar to She and Him, and now, a new band that has caught my eye, Tennis.
Tennis, a band out of Denver, CO, sounds a bit old-fashioned because of their fuzzed-out/lo-fi sound. As great as that is, what might be even greater is the two band members, Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, are married. To gain inspiration, they spent the last eight months sailing out in the ocean. Sounds pretty cool to me. You can definitely tell that this music was inspired by nature – it sounds very light and summery, maybe even enough to say it sings the ocean’s song.
