MISCELLANEOUS: For a great cause – Vote for ChangEducate in the Pepsi Refresh Challenge

If you haven’t noticed, it isn’t often that I advertise good causes here on this blog. But when it really means something to me, I’ll do it. A couple of my friends have put countless hours and effort in to design a project as a branch of Discover Worlds, a non-profit started by one of the friends. ChangEducate aims to produce and film an educational DVD on poverty and civic engagement, and distribute these DVDs along with lesson plans and curriculum to high schools nationwide. By doing so, they hope to educate students on poverty’s causes, perpetuators, and solutions. Further, they hope to engage high school students in service learning and social entrepreneurship.

What you may not know about me is that in college I designed my own major in Human Rights, but rather than taking the path of Law, I focused instead on poverty (from a non-legal standpoint). Thus, this project is obviously near and dear to my interests. I also know that it is being run by great people, and will most definitely be implemented. The leader of the group, Anjali, started the non-profit Discover Worlds when she was 15 years old because she was disheartened by the fact that so many people were unmoved by the issue of poverty. So what did she do? She acted. She started a non-profit to educate people about poverty and what they could do to act against it. It is now an international non-profit. She trained a team of educators in Rwanda.

Now, with the power of the DVD they plan to make, this effort could really take off! Help visit the competition site and vote for their idea! You can vote once a day for an effort, and voting ends March 31st. I really encourage you to do so. A good cause is so much more powerful when it’s run by trustworthy people, and I can tell you for a fact that this one is!

It only takes a second…why not, right?
