20 Must-Have Summer Songs of 2013, Part 1

posted by: Sunset Fam Lists & Rankings

We’re about one month into summer so it’s only right for the Sunset Fam to give you a dose of our favorite songs of the season so far.  We’ve compiled a list that’ll make you want to cruise to the beach with your windows down, with no worries in the world.  Here’s our top 20 must-have tracks to get you going for the rest of this lovely season.

1. Netherfriends – Uptown Boys

There’s not much I can say other than this jam by Netherfriends is one of the coolest songs I’ve ever heard. If I could only transport back to college and just drive around campus blasting this song with my windows rolled down. Fuck it, though, I’m just going to put my headphones on, play this song on repeat, and strut around living like it’s a summer day every day. It’s easy to dream when you’re always high. Lydia

2. La Plage – Rendez Vous

La Plage gives us that light, fun indie summer track we all need in our lives.  It’s dreamy and sweet like a summer treat. (Yes, I just said that with no shame.)  Alicia

3. Sol – Jump In

To be honest, I go back and forth on Sol. Sometimes I think his content is lacking substance. But when it comes to a summer tune, sometimes the last thing you want is heavy content. That’s part of what makes this song so perfect. It’s light, airy, and catchy as ever. music is my baby, she drive me crazy – Lydia

4. Portugal. The Man – Purple Yellow Red and Blue (Passion Pit Remix)

I heard the Portugal. The Man original on the radio the other day, and like…it was alright. But since I had already heard this Passion Pit remix, I wanted to just roll down the windows and scream out to the world “YOU CAN DO BETTER.” Passion Pit absolutely nailed this remix. This is a fucking awesome summer jam. That’s all there is to it. – Lydia

5. Beach Vacation – I Saw You

Beach Vacation = summer, right? No brainer folks. Not only do we need signature summer songs, but we always need a love summer song. Whether you’ve got a summer romance or merely adore the sound of a song filled with beautiful emotion, it’s a must-have. – Alicia

6. How Sad – Indian Summer

It’s a beautiful thing when you can follow along with a song’s narrative without actually listening to the words. As How Sad describes an ideal summer, the melody just floats along and sounds so positive. This one should surely be the intro to all of your summer mixtapes. – Arjun

7. Maroon 5 – Love Somebody (Viceroy Remix)

Maroon 5 knows how to create a great summer tune all on their own. So what’s the purpose in remixing their music? Because if your name is Viceroy, you have mastered the craft of taking a great summer song and turning it into an anthem. That’s why. – Lydia

8. Smallpools – Mason Jar

As if being one of the epic summer bands of 2013 wasn’t enough, Smallpools went and wrote “Mason Jar,” one of the most infectious pop songs I’ve come across in a long time. This isn’t even the happiest song if you listen closely to the lyrics, but simply the cheery sonic qualities in this song make me feel like a kid again. – Lydia

9. Jakubi – Can’t Afford It All

Sometimes you need to take some time to relax, take a load off, and just hang with your best buds. Jakubi crafts a summer-esque track with a bit of Daft Punk influence that’ll do just that for you. Head to the beach with this one because life’s a beach, live it up. #corny #factsonly – Jordan

10. YONAS – Girls of The Summer

Not the usual sound you’ll see from YONAS, in fact, it’s a little poppy. Nonetheless, it screams that summer vibe as you’ll have this chorus trapped in your head. Grab your summer girl(s) and have some fun for me! – Jordan

11. Avaberée – Lover of Mine

Fun, catchy, light: those are some of the best parts about summer songs right? These Australian darlings give us the perfect sweet seasonal tune. Thanks, Avaberée. – Alicia

12. Cub Scouts – Paradise

When we think of summer, we think paradise, right? Warm weather, sunshine, and feel-good music. Luckily we’ve got songs like “Paradise” from Cub Scouts to accompany us for car rides with the windows down. – Alicia

13. Two Door Cinema Club – Next Year (RAC Mix)

Absolutely love this. RAC takes the awesome vocals from Two Door Cinema Club‘s track and puts it over his own instrumental of poppy synths and vibrant sounding strings. While it might not be the most chill track we have on the list, it’s definitely one to put on if you feel like dancing a lil bit with your boo thang. – Andy

14. Phoenix – Be Cool (EMiL Remix)

I would like to think that you’re always trying to be cool. But sometimes, such as exam week, you are not warranted the time of day to even try to be cool. But as soon as that last test is turned in, you gotta flip the switch–kinda like how EMiL flipped this song, ya feeeel? – Arjun

15. Fryars – Cool Like Me

Are you seeing a pattern here? “Cool Like Me” was an unexpected release from Fryars. The guy jumped from James Blake to Daft Punk comparisons like it’s nothing–which is no small feat for any artist. – Arjun

16. Rihanna – Stay (Branchez Remix)

The Barbadian queen of pop (Rihanna, of course) arguably had one of the biggest songs of the year in “Stay”, aided by Mikky Ekko. Crawling, love ballads aren’t really a summertime thing, but when NYC producer Branchez got his fingerprints on the single, that story changed quickly. Bump this on your next breezy, summer night. – Dusty

17. Strangeheart – All It Took

Hollywood’s own Strangeheart caught my ear (I can only hear out of one–real talk) with this song. It just feels like a documentation of a summer romance, which um, is perfect for summer. Also, “it’s turning heads and dropping jaws and I’m so proud to call you my girl” is the realest lyric. – Arjun

18. Eyedress – Everything We Touch Turns Into Gold

This is a song to listen to during lazy days in bed. It’s equal parts haunting and romantic, and it is the perfect excuse to sleep in during summer. Get familiar with Eyedress. – Arjun

19. Betty Who – You’re In Love

From the instant those synths kick in, I knew this would be the jam. The Australian singer by the name of Betty Who has the missing quality that so many singers fail to have: a fiery charisma. I cannot imagine you not wanting to blast this on summer drives (and not because I don’t know you). – Arjun

20. Michael Jackson – Remember the Time (Funk LeBlanc Remix)

Remixing any Michael Jackson song is a huge risk. But Funk LeBlanc gets this one just right. It starts as a sunny toe-tapper but develops slyly into an all-out dance track. – Arjun

Bonus! Sterling Silver – End Up Like This

Some people see sounds in color. I can’t, but I can imagine listening to this song and driving would be unsafe. The synths would keep changing the color of the sky in flashes (okay, I don’t think it works exactly like that, but you get the point). – Arjun
