Band #3: Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin

When/Where: September 7th at T.T. the Bear’s Place, Cambridge, MA
Expectations: The new album is poppy-indie-goodness, let’s see how that translates.

The Concert: The venue was noticeably more crowded with eager fans as Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin took the stage. They opened with “All Hail Dracula!,” easily my least favorite song off their latest album, Let It Sway, and a poor choice of an opening song. But soon enough they were playing my favorite song from the new album, “Back in the Saddle,” (not an Aerosmith cover) – a happy power pop song that can make even the most bitter people smile. Seriously, I spent my time during this set in the second row, center stage, standing next to a guy who stood with arms crossed and a blank stare. But I swear during this song, not only did he smile, but he even moved in a way that could be considered head bopping.

They went on to play a solid mix of old hits and most of their new album, which the audience knew surprisingly well. They did their signature instrument swapping, and the lead guitarist-turned-drummer Phil Dickey  joked, “yeah, Jonathan [from opening act Telekinesis] taught me how to play a little bit this morning.” Clearly, that was not the case. They invited Telekinesis back on stage to play the Green cover song “Gotta Get a Record Out” that they recorded together via internet collaboration. The two bands meshed well together on stage and this song was the big highlight for me as the crowd screamed and jumped along to the chorus.

Concert Afterglow: The indie band has staying power and they played a long set, but the concert felt like a routine. I was expecting a little more magic from a band that’s been together for eight years.

Recommendation: If you are a long-time fan, go support them. If you are a new fan, listen to their album.
