“Everlasting Love” - Smokey Robinson

While we’re on the topic of Smokey Robinson (a la Curren$y’s mixtape title), why not post a classic Smokey Robinson! Such a beautiful song. It randomly came on shuffle during my drive home from work and I thought I NEED TO POST THIS TODAY. I’m in a loving mood, what can I say. Plus, sunset doesn’t get much R&B or Motown loving, so I figured this was appropriate! Enjoy!

Open up your eyes, Then you’ll realize, Here I stand with my everlasting love

MIXTAPE: "Smokee Robinson" - Curren$y

I’m about halfway through listening to this tape and have to post it already. If you want some laid back hip hop by a good rhymer, I’d highly suggest downloading. I gotta admit, it’s a little annoying to consistently hear Don Cannon promoting himself on the tags, but you can get beyond that…it’s a mixtape. Love the song “Mazaltov” with Nesby Phips and Wiz Khalifa…but I’m a big Wiz fan. Also a fan of “Fat Raps” with Chip Tha Ripper and Big Sean. Sean sounds like he’s trying to make his voice sound a bit raspier…sounds different. More importantly, though, Big Sean gives a little line about sunset! Think that’s me? :) Anyway…worth downloading!

“Allways” - Sun Hotel

At first I wondered why they spelled “always” wrong in the song title. Then, I listened to the lyrics. “I see it all the ways that I can.” Makes more sense. I digress. This band sent me some of their music to check out. In the package came four songs and cover art. I loved every song and wanted more! This here song is just a sip out of a large mug of deliciousness. I love the use of hymnal humming (forgive me for making up terms…it’s what I do at times) behind the calming and smooth voice of the main singer. The drums complement the song perfectly, and as you may know…I don’t tend to pay much attention to drums. Overall, it’s perfect proportions of instrumentals, blended with a voice that soothes my ears, and the end equation is exactly what I was looking for today. Thanks, guys!

“Lalita” - The Love Language

This just in: I have been introduced to a new band: The Love Language. The main singer is incredible. His voice is absolutely breathtaking. Powerful and loud, yet clear and serene. Can one thing encompass all of those positive adjectives? Through listening, I have learned that it can. While I wait for some more mp3s of The Love Language, enjoy this one!

I’m looking for a hand to guide me far away from the rest

LIVE: Solange and Of Montreal cover Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back”

What a great act! Of Montreal and Solange? Word. I love how Solange knew she had to be different so that she could step out of the shadow of her older sister Beyonce…so she totally took the hipster/indie route. Hats off to her.

Neon Indian is a group out of Austin, Texas (go Horns), whose band leader is often known as VEGA and has contributed time to the band Ghosthustler. They tend to use a lot of amazing samples in their music, which is the first thing that hooked me. Though there is a possibility that this music may only appeal to the super hipsters out there, it could potentially reach out to people just looking to kick it and enjoy watching the Visualizer feature on their iTunes. I think I could describe this music as drippy and trippy. Interpret as you will. Maybe it’s just easier to give it a listen and see what you think for yourself. “Mind, Drips” is an amazing song. “Psychic Chasms” was my other favorite off of their latest LP. Oh and how could I nearly forget…the cubism-inspired artwork off the album cover is simply delightful.

“I Believe” - Stevie Wonder

I was watching High Fidelity last night (great movie, by the way) and this song came on at the very end, and for the life of me I can’t recall what it reminds me of. But I can tell you this-it’s one of those songs that triggers some type of memory from my past. You have to love those ones. If you haven’t heard this one yet, give it a listen…it might get to you.

“Highs N Lows” - Kid Cudi

Kid Cudi with a Bob Dylan sample? Yes pleeeeease. This is actually an older joint of his (from like 3-4 years ago), but it was never released with decent quality, so it was released today in good quality, and I’m loving it. Consistent with Cudder’s usual act of rhyming about struggles, this one talks about his highs and lows. Once again, I relate to Cudi’s lyrics delivered in his unique voice, topped with a tiny bit of a lisp (if you can call it that), that just seems to calm me down about life in general.

Now won’t you please save Scotty low…won’t you please, God, help me please

MUSIC VIDEO: “Symphonies” (ft. Kid Cudi) - Dan Black

Lordy lordy this is a spectacular music video. I love the creativity that went into this. It’s all shot in a movie trailer format, but like…a movie from the 50’s or something. I wonder, when they came up with this idea, who was able to say…I will be able to do that and keep it interesting for a good 3 or so minutes (however long the song is). Whoever it was, they did it. Props to them!

Incase you missed it in the earlier post, download “Symphonies” (Remix)

Mashup Monday

It’s Monday. To call it Mashup Monday would make it alliteration. Why not!

“Uh Huh” - Wu Tang vs. The Beatles

“One Two Memories (Ciara vs. Kid Cudi & David Guetta)” - DOSVEC

“The xx Gon’ Give It To Ya (DMX vs. The xx)” - The Hood Internet

“Billie “Wildcat” Jean (Michael Jackson vs. Ratatat) - The Hood Internet

“F*ck the Money” (ft. Asher Roth, produced by Kanye West) - B.oB.

I tend not to like using expletives on the blog, but the song title includes a word. (Irony…I have quite a dirty mouth, but don’t like to publicize it?) This may be my favorite song off the mixtape, although let me tell you it’s hard to choose…there are lots of great songs on this mixtape. (Be sure to also check out “The Rain”, “Out of Time” … and all the others, ha.) But, VERY Dope production by Mr. West, and good rapping from both Bobby Ray and Asher Roth. You never know who’s going to drop a rhyme, they keep you guessing. Enjoy, and download the mixtape!

MIXTAPE: "May 25th" - B.o.B

B.o.B (aka Bobby Ray) drops a mixtape promoting the drop date of his album. I’m super excited to hear new material from this guy. He’s one of my favorites. Has lots of similar qualities to Andre 3000…can rap, can sing, and is an ATL local. Got some good production and features on here too!

They say Bob, how you feel about the fame? Really I aint famous til Obama know my name

New Artist Profile: Bears of Blue River

I recently got an email submission from these guys, and after listening to one of their songs, was blown away. Symphonic melodies, folky guitar plucking, and the all-around peaceful aura of the music and vocals caught my ear! I tend to like bands that use both a male and a female voice in creaming melodies and harmonies. Bears of Blue River do that brilliantly.

Here are 4 of the 5 songs on their EP. I’m leaving out the 5th not because it’s not of the same caliber (it absolutely is), but to give you incentive to test the waters and then download the whole EP to hear what the 5th song sounds like.

“Me, Me, Me” - Bears of Blue River

“Tickled Pink” - Bears of Blue River

“Bubblegum” - Bears of Blue River

“Crayola” - Bears of Blue River

I hope you enjoy their music as much as I do!

“Brooklyn to Babylon” - Shinobi Ninja

I found out about this band through Rocky Business, as they’ve shared the stage before. The other songs on their Free EP were a bit too intense rock for me, but this one blends a bit of reggae sound, hip hop, and rock. Fun party track! They also designed an iPhone game! Check it out here.

My name is Lydia. I recently graduated from Duke University and I initially started this blog as a form of procrastination. It has now developed into not only an organizational tool for me, but also a fun way for me to spread the word about lesser-known music of all genres.

Beyond the obvious of loving music, I love issues surrounding human rights, social justice, and civil rights. I am an avid NBA fan. I love traveling and reading.
